Tomorrow I'm going to Gloucester for the day from Cardiff, just to have a nose around Gloucester Quays and to see the Cathedral.

On the way back, however, I'm stopping off in Bristol to meet some friends for dinner.

I was just wondering whether or not an 16-25 Anytime Day Return from Cardiff to Gloucester (at £12.70) would be valid on the way back for BoJ at Temple Meads? I'm not sure of the different routes (if any) that I can take. Otherwise I feel as if I may have to purchase a single for each of the three journeys I make, which would cost considerably more.

I have tweeted GWR on the matter but I was told to speak to station staff on the day, which isn't particularly helpful.

On the subject of different routes, does anyone have a copy of that guide that specifies the different routes you can take between two stations?

Thanks in advance.

Snipped.....

The other day I saw GWR twitter twit (Miles ?) giving the same useless advice to someone with a Cookham to Paddington season who wanted to go Beaconsfield to Marylebone when there was disruption. The twitter twit level is abysmally low at GWR lately.

Isn't the GWR Twitter outsourced to Crapita?

That might explain the poor levels of information given out

Google ATOC Routing Guide. Map WT is the only relevant one, http://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps and it permits travel via Bristol Group.

So you'r in luck - to my slight surprise, as I would have guessed Parkway was the limit.

Permitted via Temple Meads for interchange purposes only, so if you are not interchanging (but doing other things), then you are on shaky grounds due to the doubleback at Filton Abbey Wood.

You are advised to purchase a Filton - Bristol TM or a Bristol Parkway - Bristol TM return ticket on top if you wish to break your journey at Temple Meads. It only costs £2.60 with a Railcard.

I have successfully broken my journey at Temple Meads with a similar ticket. My understanding is that BoJ is valid. I would, however, like confirmation of the positive easement (or other rule) for this. Is validity of this BoJ affected by there being a daily train each way that calls at Temple Meads on its way between Cardiff Central and Cheltenham (and beyond)?

This proves nothing. It merely shows that sometimes one may get away with a ticket that may or may not be valid. The OP, of course, may also get lucky and not run into problems.

The group stations rule is on the last page of Section A of the Routeing Guide. Note the words in bold in my previous post.

No.

I'm actually getting off at Bristol Parkway if that makes a difference?

BoJ at Bristol Parkway is perfectly valid. Of course I cannot guarantee what happens on the ground but I would expect that you shouldn't have any problem as it is a pretty reasonable route.

I would expect that break of journey to be totally valid. You may come across someone whose lack of knowledge makes them query the validity, but that can happen anywhere and at any time.

Thank you everyone.

I spoke to the gateline staff at Gloucester and they were very helpful and confirmed that alighting at any of the Bristol stations was perfectly fine, although one did say it may not go through the barrier.

I caught the 1546 Gloucester to Weymouth service, alighting at Bristol Parkway. I went up to the gateline staff and told them what they had told me at Gloucester. He stuck my ticket in and it worked fine.

Caught the 2015 from Temple Meads home.

£12.70 for a Cardiff - Gloucester - Bristol triangle is pretty reasonable to be honest!
