There was an accident at Goswick in 1947 where the presence of an unauthorised person on the footplate may have contributed to the driver and fireman not paying full attention. According to comments in the accident report.

This is mentioned in a book I read from the library years ago. The unauthorised person hoped to get a job in the locomotive dept after leaving the Royal Navy.

The accident put paid to that, they were seriously injured.

I once had someone wear fake company uniform with hi vis vest and pretend to be a staff, of course I let him in. It was only driving along and chatting when I realised he was a fruitloop and no way he worked on the railway, I chucked him out at the next stop!

That's one way of doing it.. ha ha
