Doing a weekend in Canterbury out Friday back Monday using HS1. A return from London St Pancras is £30.70, however if I book from Welwyn Garden City it is £28.50. I know it is only £2.20 but it is the principle of the matter. Does anyone know if thier is cheaper option to book back and reduce the price of HS1 from London?

Mike, unfortunately no railcard for me so Kentish Town comes in at £31.30 so slightly more than St Pancras (which is logical).

I have had a look at most stations on the Great Northern Line, if they are in the London Transport zones (upto Hadley Wood) they are all more than the St Pancras price. Any station including Welwyn Garden City south to Hadley wood costs £28.50. Going onto the Thameslink route all stations are more expensive I looked. Tried Watford Junction and Slough they are all more.

I know the amount of time I have spent looking has probably cost more the £2.20, but it got me interested. Hertford also has a cheaper fare than St Pancras, I guess it is the same zone as Welwyn. If South Eastern are reading I am sure a HS1 only fare will be on its way shortly <D

Same price from quite a few stations in the London Area inc:

Clapham Junction
Queens Road (Peckham)
Highbury & Islington

... there are more.

Didn't see FU's post so it may be worth checking the fares without the RC alough I guess they are the same.

-------

Have you looked at the SE Weekender valid PLUS HIGH SPEED? believe it comes in at £29.60.
The following ticket 'restrictions' are from East Coast booking Engine:

Travel out on a Friday after 09:30 or Saturday at any time, return Saturday or Sunday at any time of same weekend.

Thanks - Problem is I am returning Monday, but even so Welwyn Garden City is still cheaper although not by as much.

Whoops, I feel like a muppet now - just realised I calculated it as from Ramsgate, not Canterbury, so would be a few pounds less  Sorry!
