Chiltern it seems have realised they need to hire a lot more drivers and so have started tapping up staff to ask if we know any qualified drivers interested in joining. Apparently there’s six vacancies at Marylebone six at Aylesbury and one at Banbury.

Salary is around £52k and routes are basically London to Oxford/Birmingham and London to Aylesbury and everything in between and Sunday’s are outside the working week. It’s still a good company to work for and doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of drama that’s found at other tocs

I've already applied I spoke to a very nice lady in HR, I've not seen them recruit for ages, am I right in thinking DB has something to do with them now? I've always heard good things about Chiltern, is it still decent or is it starting to go a bit down hill as a lot of TOCS these days? They probably will get a lot of interest from qualified drivers I applied about 5 years ago and just missed out.

It's still ok I hear. The salary will attract applicants in the Midlands from WMT and freight. However the rise in salaried in recent yrs down south GTR I hear are on 63k means they may struggle in London

GTR have a 4 year pay deal which means that by 2021 they will be on 63k as of October this year they are on 57,800 I’m not sure what Chiltern are on I thought they were on 54k and no London waiting, have they got a pay deal in the pipeline? But personally for me I’d rather earn a bit less but work for a decent TOC and GTR have a lot of issues plus they don’t treat their staff very well, I’d like to know what their diagrams are like at Chiltern what is the average driving time? Earliest book on/off time etc... also what traction they sign out of Marylebone. People do say it’s a good TOC to work for and they don’t recruit that often which speaks volumes.

I agree with all of what you just said. Absolutely. I was recently prepared to take a pay cut to move somewhere that was a better environment. I think some of us realise we're on good pay and live within our means which in my case is still a good life style. However the reason the toc I work at now is so crap is because 90% of our colleagues would sell their arse for an extra 0.5%. I've got a really good friend at Moore street Brum he loves it. If you pm me I'll try get you in touch with him

Reason I haven't yet left by the way was they've temporary put recruitment on hold left me in complete limbo having been interviewed and told they were arranging medical?

I've applied for this as we are hoping to move up Banbury way. I applied for the last vacancies and never heard a thing back .
From personal experience their HR is shocking but then that seems the norm with most of the tocs nowadays.
The pay at gtr is currently 56k and going to 61 in October.
Got a mate who works for chiltern, says it's still ok but some of the managers are not the best as they seem to be bringing a few graduates with no experience in the role.
Having seen gtr bring in these fake managers then I really hope it's not the start of a downhill trend as chiltern seem one of the few tocs that people want to work for.

GTR has some of the worst if not the worst management in the entire railway if Chiltern start all that carry on the place will soon go to pot, the pay at GTR is 54,700 going up to 57k in October not including London waiting and Sundays which are outside the working week.
What depot have you applied to Class2ldn?

Think we need to clarify GTR pay:

GTR is Great Northern/Thameslink
£56k now,
£61k Oct 2018,
£63,196 Oct 2019.

GTR is also Southern & Gatwick Express
£54,301 now
£57,500 Oct 2018
£61,750 Oct 2019
£63,294 Oct 2020 or RPI if higher than 2.5%

Is Chiltern DOO?
I'd always factor DOO into drivers wages. Such and such TOC driver earns £X and such and such TOC earns £Y but the driver working with a guard doesn't have the added pressure or responsibility of DOO.
Personally I'd rather earn less and have a guard but I know many drivers don't see it that way.

Chiltern is DOO South of Banbury, except the Class 68s and Mark 3s which have a guard for the whole of their journey.

Earliest book on at Marylebone is 04.32 but that job is a volunteer only one. Normal earliest book on is 05.30. Late finishes are after midnight then we have a couple of night turns as well. At Marylebone the farthest north we go is Birmingham Snow Hill. We sign 165, 168 0/1/2/3, 172, 68 and DVT.

Banbury, gtr is 56k at the moment. As said that's the TL side.
Southern is a bit less.
Not holding out much hope if there's only 1 vacancy for Banbury though.

Good luck I’m sure you stand as much of a chance as the next man plus not sure how popular Banbury is but it’s worth having a pop if that’s where you want to be .

I live in zone 3 of london, so its tube only to get to marylebone.

Are you protected or non protected stsff. As a rule you would need to provide your own ticket to get to Marylebone. If you are protected staff then a priv season.

You would have needed to be employed by a TOC before 1999 I think it is? Or could be 2000. Basically having worked for BR/London Transport
