Well the linespeed where I took that image is 90MPH reducing 75MPH at the tunnels and it was only in frame for a few seconds!

I don't believe the ex Overground 172s are going on the Nuneaton - Leamington route, current WMR gangway class 172s are.

Still unclear if it has had a C6 and Modifications then and I wonder when it last used sixth gear!

Will the 172/0 fleet be having its top speed uprated?

I read somewhere a long time ago that they were reduced to 40mph (to improve reliability) for use on the Gospel Oak - Barking route as the stations were close together and would never get above that speed.

I suspect that is a platform end myth as it seemed to do very well on times up the WCML this afternoon.

It is definitely a myth. The in-cab speedos have the red line at 100MPH and the left hand side of the cab wall says ‘Max Speed 100MPH’

Funny that you mentioned that actually. I was looking at some photos the other day of the Ex London Overground 150s which transferred across to FGW and remembered the time when I had it between Plymouth and Exeter, on it's first week in the South West. Nothing like blowing out the cobwebs like a crawl up the Devon Banks and a sprint between Newton Abbot / Dawlish / Exeter! Cue a very warm gearbox smell!

I bet the gearbox must have made that same smell upon it's arrival into Tyseley!

Nothing that a bit of tape can't sort!

I wonder if we'll start to see a progressive cascade of 153's to EMT, if that is still planned.

Interesting, would make sense for events etc.at the Ricoh.
A 2 car 172 offers no increase in capacity at weekends.

Couldn’t they just start running them without new livery and then once all are with WMR then start to re livery them

Livery is no issue as long as they have had loos fitted. The normal passenger don't care about the colour of the outside of the train only what is inside it.

The unit that's been moved up will probably be out and about in the new year for driver training

Not familiar with tfl 172s but presumably they have no toilets.
Have or are WMT fitting the usual bathroom to there accusations.

When are these expected in service on the Coventry to Nuneaton line?

As far as I am aware, the plan is to introduce them by May 2019 timetable and replace the 153s. Then the timetable on the Nuneaton - Coventry and Coventry - Leamington will ramp up to 2tph on the Coventry - Nuneaton in Decemeber 2019. WMT are looking to get at least one ready for driver training within the month.

Will it be 172/0 on the Nuneaton-Cov line or is it the current WMR 172s?

I haven't heard any change to the WMT 172/2s and /3s from the snow hill lines. Since the drivers on the Nun-Cov don't currently sign 172s in any form, I don't think WMT would go to the effort of training drivers on stock which ultimately wont be the final source of traction. WMT should have all bog fitted 172/0s in tyseley by May 2019 timetable.

The franchice announcement stated 172s and I guess it will need to be as the 153s will go long before the 196s are built so train crew will hae to learn something else anyway. I see all the two-car 172s ending up in a common pool gangways or not.

You may well be right. Ultimately, only the 172s on the Snow Hill lines will be replaced by Class 196s. WMT do have an opertunity to keep them seperate. It honestly depends whether the TOC's drivers consider the 172/0s and 172/2 and /3s to be under the same driver training regime..

You suggest then that all the 196s will run Snow Hill jobs and 172s on the Herefords and Salops. Has anything been said formally by the TOC, not that I've seen.

WMT keep them separate? As the inheritors of the old “Central Trains random unit allocator” you must be joking!

You've caught me on that one! I've seen neither fully suggested. Cat will be out of the bag as soon as their on UK soil.

Separate as far as training and competency rentention are concerned as they have different cabs. It would only be a days conversion either way though if only one subclass were to be allocated to the routes, and the other added later on. Can’t think what the benefit would be though, might as well sign both subclasses then 3 cars can be used on the Nuneaton branch on busier days.

All has gone quiet on the 153 cascade to EMT though.

They’ve managed to keep us couped up on a dogbox for years! Never a 170/172 ran down in error.

April is the target date for being in service on the Nuneaton/Leamington branch. Whether the direct service happens in May is another matter.

2tph assumes the bay platform at Coventry station is built by then, along with the old schenker siding in Cov Yard being ripped up and replaced with a plain line through to the bay platform, to avoid having to join the mainline into Coventry.

The second bit is unlikely to be done by December.

According to a memo we had ages ago regarding the 196s it said they were for Shrewsbury and Worcester work. Didn't mention Snow Hill at all.
