And the pendo interior is dark and dingy, but will agree it worked on the Mkiii's

I think this is almost as subjective as seat types. Your "dark and dingy" is my "classy, relaxing and subdued" - I dislike harsh, direct, generalised artificial light, particularly in colour temperatures any harsher than warm white (cool white is tolerable, daylight white gives me a headache as it confuses my brain). While I can see other problems with them, the Pendolino's decor and ambiance is my favourite on the network.

The Pendolino ambiance is probably my favourite in the country also. The tight nature of the interior gives a very warm feel to it. All the merrier when the train is quiet also and you can get your feet up on the opposite seat. I'm always going via Edinburgh for heading down the West Coast where the Pendo is most likely to be quieter than that heading from Glasgow, although that being said I gear for the via Birmingham services when traveling from the latter for that same reason.

I prefer the pendo at night as its darker internally .Feels more relaxing .

Best seat is the one right at the back of Standard - extra legroom, unlikely to be chosen by a genuine candidate for a Priority seat because you'd be walking past a load of others to get to it, and no overhead fluorescent tubes, just a single spotlight. And space for your bag behind the seats on both sides.

I suspect my preference for this seat is not likely to conflict with the preferences of DarloRich :)

Just posted the following summary list in the repaints thread. Perhaps it's worth merging the two, as I assume 109 will emerge in the new colours?

Units in black are untreated internally and still in Dynamic Lines. Units in bold are in the new livery but untreated internally. Units in red are currently undergoing internal refit. Units in indigo (none yet) are revinyled and refurbished inside.

185101, 185102, 185103, 185104, 185105, 185106, 185107, 185108, 185109, 185110, 185111, 185112, 185113, 185114, 185115, 185116, 185117, 185118, 185119, 185120, 185121, 185122, 185123, 185124, 185125, 125126, 185127, 185128, 185129, 185130, 185131, 185132, 185133, 185134, 185135, 185136, 185137, 185138, 185139, 185140, 185141, 185142, 185143, 185144, 185145, 185146, 185147, 185148, 185149, 185150, 185151.

Feel free to correct any errors/omissions and update as and when changes take place.

First five units to go in for a refurb are having only basic "unseeable" mods done as a trial basis. This will then be assessed and the next batch will have "visible" mods done and the final batch will have wifi and working PIS fitted. The original batches will then go back in for the full works. So 185109 will be back in service soon with original panels and seating but mods will have been done.

Is the PIS being replaced with a different system?

What's wrong with the PIS on 185s? It's one of the best automatic systems I've come accross by a long way. Be a shame if they mess with it.

Very much agree with this. However quite a few people don`t agree.

I also strongly agree with this. What are the main gripes people have with it-never heard any criticism of it myself!

I dislike the voice, it sounds rude and clipped. But that's easily changed.

I wonder are they fitting an ultra-modern system that shows more than the next stop e.g. that on the 700s?

It is life expired technology for PIS, and now is a reasonable time to replace it.

Somewhat OT, but if the PIS on the Class 185s is life-expired, what does that make it on the Class 365s?

Huh? But robokat is the voice of the TPE train!

Lets hope we dont lose roborob on the platforms too...

Do you think they should run an internal competition for the new voice of TPE? Should I enter, or would a squeaky frank spencer soundalike be too much for 51 units?....

I strongly suspect that it is based upon some kind of serial communications network, possibly overlayed with the UIC568 fallback network. If one is doing something like installing wifi, possibly new CCTV etc, it's worth installing an Ethernet Train Backbone (ETB) network, if this is the case, it is definitely worth installing PIS now to bring it up to modern standards, and make spares, and pattern fit and form replacement units much easier to come by.

Even if it is Ethernet, equipment of the time for rail was usually using 10BASE-T or 10BASE-2 networks.

I do wonder if it will still be supplied by Annax or not though.

Perhaps they are also fitting a system to indicate how full the carriages are, although to be fair TPE could just put permanent stickers on the doors saying "Full to bursting" and have the same effect but just much cheaper...... ;)

They'll probably go for something similar to the new colourful Virgin WC announcements, "Helloooo, welcome to TPE.....we hope you have a cool journey and an awesome day". Distance to the next station might be included too.

Dull, dingy and depressing with acres of cheap beige plastic. Horrific.

Oh and get your feet off the seats you filthy, selfish *#%$ - people have to sit on the seats after you.

And there's the first bite, quite comical. Love throwing the rod out now and again

I agree, the seats could be doing with a bit of improvement. New ones would be miles better, especially ones which actually have an armrest on the window side!

Anyways, back to the 185s...

I HATE that system, glad they seem to have dropped the awful "Today we are travelling to..." bit. The major issue with the VTWC system is that it does the "we are now arriving at..." way too early - on TPEx it would announce Huddersfield as soon as you left Dewsbury!

At least it doesn't announce Haymarket right after you leave Lockerbie. ;)

The Mk3s are apparently back on as the plans to involve swaps with GWR and Northern couldn't go ahead. They are to be used for driver training on 68s but will also be used in passenger service. Where and when remains to be seen.

The Mk5s will commence testing in Europe this Autumn before the first set comes to the UK in time for UK testing at the start of 2018. The first diagrams will transfer over in May 2018 with all the loco hauled sets available for service by the Autumn of 2018.

The 185 refurb, as stated above sees 109 at York, but it will return back to service as it was before. Info last week was that the first fully refurbished unit can be expected mid to late March.

The existing seat frames are being retained, just resprayed and fitted with new cushions.

Currently onboard 185150, it is in the new livery but has had no work done to the interior.
