I've just been told by Wendy at Eversholt Rail that there 44 class 313s will come off lease from Thameslink in Q3 of 2018. Between 6-8 units will go to Merseyrail as back up units to there sister Class 507/8 fleet until MerseyRail get there new fleet in 2020. The rest will be scrapped but spares will also be passed to MerseyRail as there becoming increasingly expensive to maintain parts or reproduce them.

Sounds coherent, our 313s will be replaced by 717s by then. At least some of them have a future :)

To be honest with you, I thought that your title was implying that the GN/Moorgate Class 313s will be passed on to Thameslink! I think changing the title of this topic to something like "Great Northern Class 313 withdrawal" would be beneficial in this instance.

There must be plenty of spare parts with Class 315s coming off lease soon as well.

Shocked none are making their way to the coastways to have more services as 313 - seeing as they're dirt cheap to run and lease.
I'm sure SN need some spare parts however!

I'm guessing a 313 is an easier swap out given they are dual-voltage and can therefore could actually substitute a 507/508 without any issue?

Whereas a 314 or 315 can only yield so many parts....

314s and 315s have different control gear to 313/507/508.

314s and 5s are thyristor, the others are traditional Camshaft control.

The number of mods that would have been required to get them to spec would instantly outprice them. Also, the future of the 313s at Southern might not be as long as previously expected...
