A few months ago they got some ex prm compliant LO 317’s, which allowed some non prm compliant 317’s to go to Harwich International for storage. Some 379’s are being used to replace non compliant units to

As far as I know 317650/652/658 are still in service although the number of 317s running has plummeted this week. Possibly snow damage?
Snow wiped out half of the class 309 fleet in the 1991 powder snow incident, several never returned to service

Sad times indeed, grew up with the 317s and they were the staple diet in my early spotting days at Ely and Cambridge. Used to bag loads in a few hours afternoon obs at Cambridge in the mid 1990s
They have certainly served their passengers well, and I hope one can be saved- looks too late for a second series unit, which is a shame, but with the likes of 348 near to original condition that would be nice.

57305 took 317650 and 317658 to Ely Papworth Sidings today so that leaves 317652 as the only second series unit in traffic.

All the first series units except 317503/505/509/514/722/887-892. 317714 hasn't come back yet but the other seven 317/7 are all back in traffic.
Saw 317710 on the hertford line this afternoon on my walk, missed the other unit would like to say it’s 513 but couldn’t be sure

317340/345 running empty Hertford East to Liverpool St at Minute to work 2H48 1743 Cambridge Monday 1st. Pairs of 379s increasingly on Hertford East services now it appears

That’s all of the 317/6 (/2 subclass) gone then. No more nice 2+2 Chapman seats.

Could anyone tell me withdrawal dates for 317512 and 317662 (possibly reformed with the motor carriage of 317661?), and also whether these two units have been sent for scrapping - with dates, if poss. Many thanks.

317512 is still in traffic. It is one of 27 units that have had a universal access toilet installed. 317662 last ran on March 20th 2020. It did swap motor cars with 317661 and was then towed to Ely Papworth where it still resides.

Many thanks Bikeman78 - really helpful.

Can anyone explain why some units are being pulled straight from service for scrap, whereas others are languishing at Ely for up to a year before being taken?
