How many 319s will be left after they go?
After this week's moves there'll be 8 remaining, but only 5 of those have seen service recently (368, 372, 369, 381, 385).
Wonder if they'll use 319372 to test the overhead wires on the stalybridge line when they go live on 1st jan like they did when the bolton to preston line electrification was completed, before it goes for scrap.
Not likely! Just my assumption, but it would be tested by a traction type that is actually going to work over the route in future.

That'll be why they tested then new Paddington <> Heathrow Airport 25 kV with two Class 90s then ? Or Dollands Moor with an 86 ?

Nobody told me this was Pedants Corner

I should've said: If Northern are asked to supply rolling stock for the testing of the new OLE, they'll likely send a traction type that is actually going to work over the route in future.

Let's be realistic. Northern want rid of 319s. They're only still in use, very minimally, due to a delay with the 331 east/west swaps. 319 disposals are still scheduled, and by early January they'll all be reduced to razor blades in a scrapyard.

A 319 is a comparitive blunt instrument when it comes to drawing power it is far more useful for testing.

A (say) 331 has too much electronics system preventing abuse as they will shut down to self protect.

Testing needs something that can be abusive. That is why they used 90s for LHR not 332s and why 86s at Dollands Moor not 92s, and why, periodically, BR used to have mobile load banks, of 84s, then 86s, etc.

And that is why IMHO, as an engineer only 40 years in industry the past 20 or so on commissioning and maintaining assets, a 319 might be better, not what the TOC operates which is less than ideal.

The first Class of Northern unit that will use the new Stalybridge wires in passenger service is the 769. That is virtually identical to the 319 in respect of the load on the OLE.

Point taken regarding class 769. But the OP asked if 319372 would test the OLE, and I think there's more chance of pigs flying
Why?
They used to it to test the bolton to preston line when electrification was complete and they are keeping the unit the middle of January.

I do wonder how much longer Northern will retain the 769s since the 319s are basically gone now?
I believe the 769s are leased until sometime in 2025. That is also when Lostock to Wigan electrification is scheduled to be complete, enabling EMUs to take over Stalybridge to Wigan services from the 769s.

Leased to 1 March 2025.

50032 is correct the first train on the OHLE will be a 331 and that's coming from someone (not me btw) who's very heavily involved in the works. They mentioned end of January for the first tests. There's quite a bit of other stuff to do regards to signs and what not that'll get sorted through January. ADDs get moved on the slow lines up to Miles Playing some point next month.

I personally think all the 319s will be gone before the have chance to use the wires unfortunately. I will miss em!

Nt necessarily. The Chat Moss line was tested by a Pendolino, a type that only uses the route on diversions,

Usually in the context of OHLE it means ‘auto dropping device’ I believe. This thread will probably explain better than I can

Yes, but in this context it’s a component of an electrical unit or locomotive, not something installed on the track which was implied here in post 283 above.

There's a strong rumour within Northern that this Fri/Sat will be the last days for 319s, although I don't expect a heads up as to what the final service will be. It'll just happen, and that will be that.

There are several 319s in storage along the back road and headshunt (alongside the Merseyrail line) at Allerton depot. All are panned up at the moment until they go off site.

Just dependent on these last two 331s 4 cars coming from Leeds. Looks like one might be successful so that will leave the 319s with no work.
