Following the damage sustained in a fire in Eastbourne last November Class 377, 377 442 has been reduced to a 3 coach unit and returned to traffic numbered 377 342.

Having tried the search function on this forum to find out more - but to no avail - I am interested to know a few things?
Is this a temporary measure? or will the damaged coach be repaired?

Also is it being used on specific (3-car) diagrams only?
Is there any easy way to try and find where it is on a specific day or not if I was trying to see it?

The only photo I've seen so far is inside Selhurst depot on the excellent 'Rail Thing - Electrics and Diesels on Southern Metals' Facebook page.

I believe it is being used on 3 car diagrams in the "common pool" out of Selhurst. Unit 377211 back from TLK is being used on rotation instead of 7442.

No idea what the cost would be or if it can be repaired. I think they're still trying to finalise what caused the fire.

Has the unit re-entered traffic yet? Havent seen any pictures apart from one of the unit in Selhurst when it was first reformed.

presumably it was the MOSL that was damaged? Even for a DC unit I'd guess there's too much power control equipment in the PTOSL for the unit to be viable without it.

Also that would technically make it a class 4xx unit.

The main ball ache would be temporarily relocating the compressor and associated control equipment to the MOSL in that situation, or having a permanently coupled unit which would be slightly unfavourable.

One of the first class areas appears to have been declassified from the outside (the yellow has been removed), probably to bring it in line with the other 377/3s with FC at one end.

(A little bonus if anybody happens to have a long trip, as it has plug sockets ;))

Is 377 442 still running around as a 3 car? Is there any progress on returning it to 4 car or is it going to remain like that?

It was certainly a three car earlier in the week. IIRC I was on it on Monday or Tuesday.

Yes, have seen it today. I hope it should not be too long now until it’s a 4 car again, but was 78842 written off?
