Would be nice to see those 379s permanently replace some of the oldest 357 stock on c2c, but that will never happen as of current ar least. C2C didn't fight too much to keep the 387s they had and I assume that's down to the 357s working better lease wise plus now that the 720s have rolled thru they'd not want 3 different traction types if assume.

The 387s were on short-term lease and GTR leased them long-term once the extension expired; the reduced timetable meant the 357s more than covered the existing diagrams, so c2c had the capacity to release them. There was even word that c2c wanted to cancel their 720 order (part of the reason they took longer than expected to enter service), but by that point they were contractually obliged to take them on.

C2C recently said they’d be looking at replacements for the 357s from 2028-2030 as the lease on that fleet expires. Not too far away really.

There are also stories that Anglia wanted to sub-lease some of its 720s to c2c because no longer thinks it needs quantity ordered. Anything from 10-20 units (numbers suggested have varied bit over time)

But if c2c would have problems getting out of some class 357 leases not going to want to pay for even more rolling stock in next 5 years until 357 lease ends.

Ah I see. Isn't too long indeed.

Ah I see makes sense why they went straight back to GTR with no issues.

Do the 357s really need replacing that early? They seem perfectly suited to the C2C routes, and 30 years seems very young for an EMU? Neither Southern nor Southeastern are planning to replace their early Electrostar fleets.

I don’t think so. They’re showing their age a bit in places, but with a little sprucing up I reckon the 357s could easily do at least another 10 years from now.
