I appreciate 442s are not identical to HST trailers, but I'm amazed that the latter is cleared but the former isn't- especially given the low structure of the viaduct mentioned? The railways really are a strange place at times!

442's do not even appear in the Sect Appndx for Anglia, so in theory route barred anyway, however each move will have its own paperwork for a specific routing.

How often would 422s have travelled that route in normal service? There's your answer as to why nobody did the paperwork to clear them.

442s have never, until these moves, gone between Cambridge and Ely by either the direct route nor the convoluted route they are using via Bury St Edmunds. So they've never been cleared for either route. The paperwork allowing the route they are using will have been done specially for this

I know of no service ever that's ran from Cambridge through Newmarket using loco hauled Mark 3s

I do know that the direct route, via Waterbeach, is used for planned and emergency HST diversions between Hitchin and Peterborough

Why Ely? Seems a long way to put them in store...

The owners probably asked many siding owners for a best price for storage before they go to Booths. Probably nothing significant about Ely at all, they could have been put anywhere.

It isn't as if they'll ever come back... :D

I was puzzled by all the ely references. Why are they anywhere north of London. Afaik, after leaving Swt land they've only worked vic to brighton route and now going to storage at Eastleigh. I'm puzzled......

They aren't being stored at Eastleigh, it is only a temporary stay on route to Ely, at Eastleigh they 'decommission' them and remove the third rail gear for haulage..

imagine those as a revamped version of the 309's to and from Clacton ? :D

They do bear a little resemblance to the 309s at the front don't they. Well, before they had the curved windows replaced with flat ones that is.

only the brits would moan about having too many carriages!!!

Remember we still dont know where the rest of the 319s, 317s, 321s, and 365s are going yet, there needs to be room for these to.

The Pacers, 313s, 315s, 507s and 508s should probably go straight to the scrapyard.

Is 005 still in service? I had that about a week ago and not seen mention of it since

Apologies if I sound a bit dim, but, by '005', do you mean 442 405? If you do, that unit is still in service and I recall seeing it last week on a London Bridge-Eastbourne service. I believe that unit is going to be around until the complete withdrawal of 442s from Southern in 2018.

No replacements for the 507s and 508s have been ordered as yet so they will not be going into store anytime soon.

Anybody still going for haulage on the 442's had better get in quick.

Barring any last minute changes, this wekend is scheduled to be the final Saturday / Sunday operation of 442s.
All weekend Gatex services from Saturday 17 should be 387s

Does, that include the 387's doing the Eastbourne expresses or are the 442's still going to be used for those services?

Still 442s until 2018. As Southern (not Gatex or TL) do not have any 387s.

Better start redoubling the Ardingly branch, then. :p
If the connection did exist, would there be any space at Horsted Keynes for storage of carriages?

It would help the Bluebell out if the lines were built for them.

Clearly never going to be storage option though in case anyone thinks I'm being serious.

I agree with you comment Neil, however I believe that the fast trains to Eastbourne are run with Express branding i.e. they are run under the Gatex franchise, not the Southern franchise. This is in the same way that Gatex class 387 units I believe are doing the express services from Brighton to London Victoria or is this being run by the former Thameslink class 387's?

When the 4 CEP's were first built they were stored on the Ardingly branch prior to introduction.

There hasn't been a Gatwick Express franchise since 2009, it's currently a sub-brand of Southern. The Eastbourne trains are run by Southern with no connection to Gatwick Express.

If you're referring to the Class 387/1s, these are passing exclusively to Great Northern, with the loaned 387/2s returning to GX.
