Class 455 and 458 ongoing maintenance updates

I created SWR Metro Fleet Withdrawals to monitor the withdrawal process (obviously I had expected 701s to be imminent at the time, so it didn’t seem premature back then) and permanent standing down/handing back of 455/456/458/707 by SWR.

Naturally we’ve discussed the withdrawal of 456 and some of the 455/707 on there which is great.

But a lot of you want to discuss the ongoing maintenance of 455s - and occasionally 458s - and that’s not related to permanent withdrawals. So I’ve made this thread for you to continue that discussion there to keep the thread I made about the withdrawals.

:)

455849 is in passenger service today (17/05) on 2H93 1743 London Waterloo to Shepperton
5724 back in service on 30/05 - It needed a replacement choke in the traction case. The choke is absolutely massive and on the bottom part of the traction case, requiring the traction container to be removed and inverted, the container weighing over a tonne. An absolute nightmare to change.

5909 back in service on 05/06
Any sign of 5905?

I wondered about the status of 458533, which doesn’t seem to have run for some 18 months, and is not off-lease as far as I’m aware.

8533 needs multiple wheelsets. Motor wheelsets are an issue as the 458/4 uses a 100mph gearbox so a lot of the spare wheelsets were moved to that project for conversion. Leaving the requirement for 75mph gearboxes behind in the queue. And 8533 donated some of it’s good wheels to other units to keep them going during the hiatus.

Wheelsets are coming through now but in small numbers so the units only needing one may get a wheel they need and lifting facilities are almost always in use so the unit won’t get started til they have all the wheels for it.

Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks, they're the last few I need but some of them haven't been around on my last couple of visits (over the past month or so). Might just be a coincidence.
I just checked RTT for you; none out at the moment although there are some additional peak diagrams in the mornings and evenings.

Looking at my notes, I think it was that I saw 455 920, not bashed it, but it was in service. That would have been 22nd April, so possibly too far back to read anything in to.

Just seen a ROG 37 hauling a single 455/8 through Wimbledon (didn't catch the number). Is this off for scrap?

8506 has been reformed after the DMSO car that went away came back from Brodies. It went on a test run to Effingham on Monday, a few minor niggles to sort out and it should be good to go. Now status OK and declared as a prepped spare today

5915 now changed to Status OK. Needs a test run.

5730 should be on the Bournemouth run tomorrow 07/07 for C4.

5915 had a successful test run on 29/06.

A short diagram on the 30th 2H89/2H96 and then back with full diagrams yesterday and today.

8506 reentered traffic on 30/06

You're probably sick of hearing this by now, but any idea if 5722 is returning to service any time soon please? Was told a month or two ago it was having test runs prior to coming back off maintenance.

There was a question in another thread about the whereabouts of 458522. It's back in service - seen today.

458501 showed up this afternoon for the first time since June. Has it been out of use or just evading me?

455850 is back in service looking very shiny indeed

Looks like a fresh coat of paint. They must still have some red left over. had they known the 455s were still going to be in service six years down the line, would they have started painting them in SWR livery? (Anyone out there with photoshop skills able to do one?)

Well, SWR haven't exactly rushed to repaint the diesels, which were always going to be retained for years to come, so I rather doubt it. We're over six years on from the FG / MTR takeover, and even the flagship Desiros aren't all reliveried yet.
