Have any more been moved up to Wolverton? 456004, 010, 017, 018 should be there, but not noted any more reports of northbound transfers.

As far as I am aware there will be no moves northward untill all the units already there are finished. Then the un refurbished units will move up one by one.

Just to report that I at last caught a refurbished 456 last night off of WAT. Was on the slightly late 1909 to Guildford. Have to say I was impressed with the interior: clean bright and a good use of space.

It was quite amusing looking around me as most passengers seemed oblivious to the fact that this was not a 455 - even the guy sat in the single side-on seat near the doors which gives it away.

Looking forward to their continued roll-out.

They give us a headache as the restrictions are always changing between the red & green ones (snot rockets!).

They weren't so much "oblivious" as "couldn't care". The exact type of train is of little interest to most people, especially when they're as similar inside as a 455 and a 456.

Can anyone advise recent movements to/from Wolverton please? Particularly 456004, 456017? Is the latter now in service please?

The strange thing is I don't seem to be able to notice the difference unless I see the cab.Rarely get near these though.Almost my 456 debut today but it wasn't to be.:|

presumably the "red 456 is a 457" thing is a diagram issue like the 458/5s being entered as 459?

Are they going to revert back to their correct class number when all refurbs are complete.

ie 458/5 becomes 458 when all the 458/0s have gone been altered,

and red 456s become 456 when there are no snot rockets left.

Makes me wonder if the 450/5s had a similar 'pseudo class number' while they were dedicated to particular services.

Don't recall it ever coming up though, perhaps with no changes to operation as far as crew were concerned it wasn't necessary.

No they didn't as basically they were the same as the 450/0's.Only mods as far as i remember was bins removed an put under seats and first class removed.

I think some second class seats were removed and have not been replaced - six from each DMSO and 5 from the TSO. They keep the 450/5 designation because they are not there.

But I am open to correction on this.

Therefore presumably entirely down to fleet diagramming to keep them on the right services, and if they did go off patch now and again in emergency it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Yeah but when it botched up they did stray a bit.So ordinary ones worked the Suburban.

Saw the unit being delivered on the A3 the other evening, was very strange seeing a train like that! Why is not delivered by rail? Surely it costs more and causes more inconvience.

Arranging loco hauling, getting the right crews who sign the right routes etc etc must be too expensive. Shouldn't be the case but I guess it is.....or maybe some extra bits of commissioning needs to be done at WD.

It's been posted before that there's a break even point around 3 coaches, below which it is cheaper to use road.

Of course many complete units are moved about under their own power by rail, but you have to take into account they are usually AC or Dual voltage EMUs; or DMUs. A 456 would have to be hauled by a loco away from the DC area so you'd need various translator vehicles as well.

I believe that I saw a 10 car formation - 455+455+456 going into Wimbledon Park depot at about 1415 today. Can anyone confirm this did happen. I also assume that it was on a test run
