I've heard that all the 56's and a 58 (I think the latter is in preservation) that are stored at the Leicester depot are being moved. Does anyone know why and where they are all going ?

TIA

The majority, if not all, of the 56s are the ones that have just been sold to GBRf have they not?

A bunch of 56s have been sold for reengineering and were due to move to EMD Longport but due to paperwork issues, they had to be left at Leicester. Information regarding the sale of the locos has been online for nearly a week...

I have seen a SmileVideo Trains video at Leicester showing 66727 moving some 56's along with 66708. (

From the Class 56 group website:

"Although exact locomotive numbers are yet to be officially identified, it is thought that they include 56007, 018, 031, 032, 037, 038, 060, 065, 069, 077, 081, 098, 104 & 106 from Leicester and also 56009, which is currently located at the Battlefield Line Railway along with 56128, which has been at CF Booth’s scrap yard in Rotherham since last year."

Obviously not quite known at this stage, but it gives a good idea of potentially involved locos.

At least if they get 56128 from Booths then I can score it for sight along with 56009.

Is there a limit to how many could be moved at one time in the same train?

The rule book says...
So anything more would probably need to be done under an exceptional load headcode with special permissions.

In normal circumstances 5 is the maximum.
As you say, anything in excess of five is dealt with using the exceptional load procedure. Will run under an X headcode and a 3973 form is required. This gives routing of the move and any special speed restrictions. This came about with the need to move more locos around for engineering works.

If they're "alive", is there a limit then?
Although after passing them just last Saturday, I don't think that'll be many...
