Are the 68s "proper" loud? As in class 47 or 56 type loud ? Or are they just slightly noisy, like a 67?

They are as loud as the 66s. They would be extremely deafening - in a good way - but they have had silencers put on so they are quieter similar to the 66s.

Ah well. I'd be happy if they sounded like a 20, 37, 50 or a 56. And I live backing on to a railway. :D

They sound nothing like the 66s. Wouldnt want to say if they are louder or not, as 66s arent quiet, but they are different. More a grumble and a whine.
Theres a video knocking about somewhere.

I believe the video you are talking about is the one on the test track? It hadn't had the silencer fitted then. I believe the silencers are fitted over here once delivery has been taken. As I say it's more a 66 with a 'grumble', the ying yings are a little higher pitched, but not overly so. It's certainly not to noticeable.

So will 68002 be at Crewe Heritage DRS day then? (Sat 22nd). If not, will it be passing through?

I don't think so. The 68 on the video was not as loud as a Grid (which do have silencers).

No locomotive is quieter than a 66 except maybe a Gronk or the MTU-engined HST power cars. Even a 67 makes more noise as the engine note has much more bass. A 70 is louder still, though not by much.

I hope the 68's are more entertaining. I have yet to hear one power up except in the video.

Too much wind noise to determine the loudness.

Utter rubbish.

They are exactly as they are, no silencers fitted before coming here. The amount of people who seem to know who couldn't possibly have heard one makes me laugh. Even being run up stationary on 2/3 power, they are noisey, and have a deep deep rumble.

68003 & 68004 were both outside and partially visible yesterday. Neither appear to have nameplates fitted yet (68002 had its fitted just before it left). 68004 has works plate 2682/2014 but 68003 did not have one visible. 68003 was having its engine run and produced some black smoke when it was opened up. As for noise, I have heard them running in the yard and from 25-50 metres away they are fairly quiet, humming when idling and singing when powered up. Not much to compare them with here except the very similar Euro 3200s. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=4d65098acc latest additions if you scroll to the bottom.

I agree with you The Citadel, so I've no idea where Modern Railways got that information from, it's simply nonsense!

If there are any noise regulations they can't be that strict as the 37's are still going.

True! I'm pleased that they sound like a proper locomotive. Even the class 70's make a din! :)

The first railtour to feature a Class 68 has been announced this weekend, and is in conjunction with the DRS Open Day at Crewe on July 19th. See http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/index.php/tour-calendar-reader/events/the-caterpillar-cat.html

Already?!! That was quick off the mark! :D

I suspect the 68 will be noisy as the loco is relatively small compared to its engine size with less room for a big silencer. The much larger 66 and 70 had plenty of room for a silencer hence the reason they are so quiet.
