Class 73's back on Merseyrail

[Hydro]

The Track Recording Coach is running vice the TRU (950) using two 73's (138/107 I believe) on the Merseyrail network this week. It appears 73's will be used when running in the tunnels, with a 31 tagged on for above ground work. This formation appears to be running today, Monday night and Tuesday night, with unspecified traction requirements for the rest of the week (probably the 73's plus 31). Headcode is 2Q78, 2X78 when underground.

The train left midland slightly late and passed totley box aprox 30 min down. However just had a phone call at 1425 to say its not reached edale (on the hope valley line ) yet

Understand that 97304 despatched from RTC to Edale , entire train will be returned to RTC the 37s will be taken off. The train powered by the 73s will then proceed via Uttoxeter.

whats the point in sending a 37 for above ground work? I can understand sending it to make sure that the train gets to kirkdale (:roll but surely it would make more sense to just run the 73's on the juice whilst above and below ground?

I'm sure they will use the 73s for power, but will just have the 37 incase something goes wrong.

I imagine a 507/508 could be used as a rescue train though? (coupled to the 73)

The 37 was booked to come off at Edge Hill and go light to Wigan.

That's right, the 97 was to be used when the train was off the juice. I just couldn't be arsed sifting through the timings deducing when and where it was coming off and on again.

I relation to the 73's tour of the North, early hours of Friday 17th they are believed to be visiting Blackpool North AND SOUTH!!! The Fylde branch will be ED'd first and then Blackpool North. Not 100% confirmed but that's the gen I've received from 2 sources now...

That's correct. Very early Saturday morning 2Q78 is due to go to both locations. No mention of a formation change. 0313 at South, and 0434 at North.

The operational wrangling to get such a formation working around the traffic patterns is quite something. It's too long for certain loops, it takes too long to reverse compared to a unit, it's too slow due to loco differentials, even a passenger service has had to be retimed to fit this behemoth of a test train in. I'm surprised the entire TRC formation was sent up there. Two ED's plus the inspection coach could've done, and that probably won't have needed the 97.

Reign in the horses, there's unconfirmed rumours (in passing, over dinner, so make of it what you will) that 37's could make an appearance. What is confirmed is industrial action may affect test train movements Thursday, so if there's any subsequent knock on effects...

It's not in service with Network Rail and never has seen service (NDS do probably own it mind). It was to be become another 97/3, but wasn't required (if I recall, one or two 97's were to be used with non-Ansaldo ERTMS kit for evaluation, but it didn't happen due to money). AFAIK it's stored. It's the 97 that never happened, so it's pretty tenuously a NR yellow 37 because I'll bet if it does enter service, it'll be as a 97.

In regards to the Blackpool moves, one source tells me it is the wee hours of Friday and the timings provided here say it's the wee hours of Saturday. I take it the ones posted here are the updated versions?
