Depending on the internal fit, "Aurora" might turn out to be more of a "Boring Alice".

Boring Alice. Borealis. Aurora Borealis.
Geddit?

I'll see myself out...

I don't really see the point of names, how many of the general public will go out of their way to go on a train because it has been named Nova or Azuma. Although I think many will try to avoid any train with Northern on the side of it.

Aurora Borealis.
The Aurora Borealis is featured in the video games Half Life 2:2 and Portal 2. Google says it also has something to do with the Northern Lights.

At this time of day, at this time of year, in this part of the country? Localized entirely within your train?

Aurora Borealis literally means the Northern Lights. But you're right, the Borealis a ship in the Half-Life games.

Maybe if you stand on the top of Ratcliffe Power Station's chimney, you might glimpse the Northern Lights. Only possible local connection I can think of.

The Borealis is also called the Aurora Borealis although I'm assuming the OP means the northern lights.

Yes. May I see it?

No.

(sees 180... The train is on fire!)

No, that's just the Northern Lights.

Yes. In First Class, with the 13th Duke of Wimbourne...

More (indeed, wholly) seriously, it does strike me as one of those branding exercises that will get a lot of in-house promotion, the way LNER do on their booking engine, but which no-one else will give a stuff about. Then again I work in PR, not marketing or publicity ;)

I mean inside each of the carriages, very loud.

So double the engines, let's hope it's not double the noise lol.

Don't know which trains you have been on, but when ever I am on one and sat in carriage where engine is, I always find it noisier on electric, yes you hear the engine turn its self on but I don't find it intrusive

I find them insanely loud. Here's a few clips I recorded of my many loud journeys:

Unlike previous DMUs, it varies greatly based on where you sit in the carriage. I don't think 80x units are much quieter than other post-privatisation DMUs if you sit above the engine, but if you sit at the opposite end of the vehicle (the engines are located towards one end) you hardly notice them at all.

That sounds a noisy as a Voyager! Yet these trains are brand new versus a 20 year old voyager! Hmm... If the 802s are anything to go by the 810s will be even louder. o_O

Given that in the GWR video you could clearly hear everything being said over the announcement I'm not convinced that the engine noise is all that noisy.

Yes the video makes the engines sound loud, but how much of that is it's just a loud video which is just amplifying what's there? Unless the announcement is also very loud to overcome the volume of the engines.

I have been on 800s that are quite noisy but I think I was sat right over the engine on those journeys.

If you think that is loud, try a Class 150.
That. 800s aren't quiet enough to pretend they aren't DMUs where there are no wires, but conversely they aren't loud by DMU standards either. I'd describe them as 'adequate' in that regard and that includes long-distance express work. Having done the 3h+ Penzance to Exter run on a 150, an 800/802 would have been bliss by comparison!

I did Waterloo to Exeter in a 159. My ears were ringing so much with that horrible whine they make that I coughed up for a new ticket to come back on an 80x.

I really don't find them an issue to be honest, I think I actually prefer travelling on them to 800s, so that only goes to highlight how subjective things are.

In any case, back to the original discussion, this all stemmed from the idea that one vehicle was supposedly having two engines in the 810s wasn't it? Is that definitely the case? I was under the impression the extra GU was going in one of the driving cars.

No, not really. The frequency of Class 158 transmission whine which pervades the saloon is *just* at the right frequency to make my ears hurt. I'd rather a guttural 156!
So if it’s such a problem, why did you book on a train that was guaranteed 158/159 then?!

It appears we might not have to wait long to see what the 810's will look like. This is on the 'We Are EMR' Facebook page:
Have you spotted the new "tent" that arrived at Etches Park depot last week?
The temporary structure has been erected adjacent to 4Shed in time for the arrival of our new #EMRAurora cab mock up (aka #BabyAurora)... which will be revealed later this week! #ComingSoon
