Ok. I was speculating on the capacity of bulk carriers and demand for coal. Buying three years' supply seems more feasible and carries less risk of coal prices collapsing and being left with unsaleable stock.

But if coal prices 'collapsed', that would make the fuel cheaper for heritage railways.

The one analyst who's stuck his head out (just as fallible as you and me) predicts thermal coal prices will stay high for the next five years.

My perception from afar is while Germany has been fast to embrace coal again, the UK (as a whole) is slower, despite your winter coming up and what media suggests is rapidly rising energy bills.
We've already demolished most of the coal-fired power stations. And there are huge carbon taxes on coal such that it is cheaper to burn gas, even at recent prices.

Cheaper still to burn sewage. Better than dumping it into the sea.....

This I doubt. Even before the recent Russia crisis there was much talk of the increasing scarcity of coal as mines shut down due to the steady decrease in demand, and the same will happen to oil. Wood/biomass/etc. derived fuels seem the only option that will truly last.
The coal mine project in Cumbria was thwarted for environmental politico reasons, not economic ones
