Hi,
Asking on behalf of a friend - it’s fairly urgent so hoping someone can help!

A friend has had train tickets from Woking booked for him by his company. They’ve booked him for collection but the ticket machine requires the card it was booked on and he doesn’t have it because it’s a company card.

Am I right in thinking that the booking office at Woking should be able to help him? And does anyone know if it’s open tomorrow with the ongoing strikes etc?

Are you sure it isn't an any card collection? My company use a corporate rip off travel provider that just requires a card, and it's billed to the company account

Any card should be able to be used at the ticket machine to collect the ticket. The card won’t be charged, it’s just a way to get the ticket machine to start the issuing process.

The machine may say it requires the same card (I noticed the other day the TVM interface was misleading in this respect), but for a corporate booking it's unlikely to be the case.

The original card is never required if the payment was made through a warrant account, with vouchers or credit, or using PayPal or Apple Pay. It's also usually not required if the payment was made with a corporate booking account. A ticket office can usually reset a booking to any card collection if this isn't in the original booking. I believe London Overground now issue ToDs without a card being presented anyway.

The short summary is as above, try the machine, use any old card if prompted.

Thank you, unfortunately he tried that and it said it had to be the actual one. He’ll try the ticket office tomorrow, cheers!

If the TVM is insisting on the card used for the booked being interested, call the company the tickets were booked through and ask them to enable the the booking for "any card collection."

No, call the person that booked it, and ask them to call the retailer.

Even then, there's no guarantee that the retailer will change the booking to an "any card collection" and the ticket office can't override this either.

They don't have to but it's not true that they can't. I've picked up tickets where ACC isn't set from my local ticket office a couple of times where I've forgotten my physical card (ToD is one of the few times I need it now - I often go out without a wallet at all and just use Apple Pay).

As noted above, the machine may say it has to be the same card, even if the booking is set for any card collection. Did he actually try putting a card and the collection reference in, or did he just see the words "same card used for payment" (or similar) on the screen and walk away?

Thanks for your help all. In the end the ticket office sorted this out and he was able to continue his journey as necessary.

I've also had this offered for me at a Chiltern booking office when trying to use the TVM.

Really, they shouldn't be offering to do this without checking photocard ID (in line with the iKB procedure) because most retailers have made a conscious decision to enable - or not enable - Any Card Collection based on their appetite for the risk of liability if the purchase does turn out to have been made fraudulently.

That said, it's probably all a moot point nowadays with 3D Secure anyway.

Good to hear and thanks for updating us.

Just another benefit that will be lost if the mass closure of local ticket offices goes ahead.

I've had to collect tickets from a ticket office a couple times and never been asked for id, both times i showed the reference number, they printed the tickets, gave them to me and that was it (at least once in Oxford and once at Birmingham New Street)

I always collect TOD at the office using contactless Samsung Pay on my mobile phone and I've never been asked for ID or had any trouble. I've done it double-digits numbers of times at Oxford and a handful of times at Exeter St Davids and Bristol TM.
