Noticed while buying my bus pass at the TVMs that sell both TfL and NR products that they've finally been upgraded to contactless readers, although the display for paying via chip and pin isn't great. They're the same model used at Elizabeth line stations as well.

LO stations have had contactless readers fitted to the older TVMs for a while now, such as the totem TVMs at Forest Hill.

Are they TETRA Self Modular models by Ingenico? I've attached examples of a couple on the LU machines at Farringdon (Liz line machines at Canary Wharf have them too).

Yes, they're the models I've seen today at Forest Hill. The old chip and pin reader with the LCD display was Ingenico as well.

Many tube stations are getting these fitted on old ticket machines. I used Ruislip today this way which must have been changed this week

It does feel retro, but is using chip and pin that much of a hardship?
Time wise it can make the difference between getting on a train or not. Contactless is significantly faster to purchase a ticket than chip and pin.

l wonder if a lot of people don't know their Pin, or like the poster below yours, don't carry the physical card? l was in M&S foodhall the other week and they had staff on the door advising customers that it was Cash, or Chip+Pin only, and was surprised by the number of people who turned around and walked straight out.

The issue is that most people don't carry physical bank cards (or cash for that matter) around with them anymore (I haven't done for many years); they pay using their phones (using contactless technology with Apple Pay or Google Wallet).

Seeing as contactless payments were introduced in 2007, it's bizarre that TfL choose to keep their TVM technology almost two decades obsolete. However I suspect it's an intentional barrier put in place as a 'soft-push' to get people to not buy tickets and 'tap-in' instead.

For what it's worth the new readers don't do contactless verification for Ticket on Departure collections, at least on Cubic TVMs. I tried it (still asked for the card first) on the HX/Liz platforms at Heathrow Terminal 5.
