Hi

Please can anyone confirm the status of AC loco 86259 Les Ross? I believe it is not running at the moment and that repairs are in progress?

I am doing the Cumbrian Coast Express on Saturday 14 March and wonder what the chance of the loco making the trip?

Thanks,

Gary

Was said on another forum that 86259 was due to start running on the CCE/CME from 21 March. Would guess the non-steam part of your trip will be 2 x 47. Just what I heard, could be wrong!

Alastair, thanks for that, it would be a nice change for me to have a couple of 47s out of Euston!

On a semi-related note, can 86s work with a DVT? I've seen 86259 working with the pretendolino but 86s don't have a rubbing plate which I thought was quite important if working push-pull.

Yes the class 86s did work with DVTs regularly, though they weren't fitted with rubbing plates - and nor were class 87s. Both classes relied on the traditional screw link couplings and buffers for push-pull working.

Indeed, and did so as recently as 2009 when Hull Trains hired in 86101 & the ETLs blue DVT + Cargo D Mk3s to work Kings Cross - Doncaster shuttles after 222103 was dropped off the jacks at Crofton.

Is it really safe to propel a train at 110 with buffers & a screwlink?! That was the thing I couldn't get my head around that prompted the question.

Ahh I'd forgotten about this, of course!

A rubbing plate won't be of any use on it's own anyway. It's purpose is to provide the absorbtion of compression forces (which would ordinarily be done by the buffers) to trains which are coupled with a buckeye type coupler.

Loco hauled/propelled trains on the continent potter around quite happily screw coupled all the time.

For the record, my trip yesterday was with 47237 and 47580. As far as I can see there were 2 drivers as 580 doesn't have multiple working? 4-6-0 46115 did the main part of the trip from Carnforth - Carlisle via Shap and back via Sellafield. A nice but long day.
