Travelling on the 11th February, returning on the 18th. I've plugged all the info into NRE, getting the best offer of two £38.50 singles, total £77. This is via route Deal - Ashford - St Pancras/Kings X - Doncaster - Gilberdyke. Can any ticket whizzes best this with some splits?

This route seems to be simplest, as persons travelling will have plenty of luggage and a pushchair, it cuts out the Underground completely.

Will the pushchair have an occupant? If so, a Family & Friends Railcard may be worth considering:

Deal - Gilberdyke route + EC & Connections
1 adult @ £38.50 reduced to £25.40
1 child @ £19.25 reduced to £7.30
Sub-total £32.70
Additional 11% discount if bought online through East Coast.
Total £29.75

Gilberdyke - Deal route + EC & Connections
£29.75 as above

12-month Family & Friends Railcard £28.00, reduced to £25.20 if bought online here. Offer expires 31 December 2011.

Total cost £84.70
An extra £7.70 on this single journey gives the adult traveller (and any one other adult whose name is given at the time of purchase) and up to two additional adults and up to four children a discount for 12 months of 34% off the adult fares and 60% off child fares. A 'child' is aged 0-15 on the date of purchase of the card. Minimum group size 1 adult Railcard holder + 1 child. No discount for adult(s) travelling without a child.

If the traveller decides that the Railcard is not appropriate, the £38.50 fares can still be reduced by 11% by booking through East Coast.

Trying to split walk-up fares on this journey will not get you anywhere close to the advance fares you have found.

If I were you, I would book the tickets as soon as you can, or they are liable to disappear.

Just wonder if you might be able to get a cheap advance that uses Hull Trains to Selby and change for a Northern service from there?

Yes, the pushchair is occupied, but mother has Priv, and the child goes free - the fare I'm after is for an additional person. So it's basically book through EC in advance for the 11%, thank you very much guys!

The cheapest Deal to Selby is EC & Connections £35.50. To get the cheap fares from London to Selby on Hull Trains, you might need to buy a SVR from Deal to London at £30.30 on top - there don't seem to be any advances from Deal into London.

The priv holder *may* be better getting the advance fare anyway, especially with a railcard, than paying priv rate on a full fare ticket.

Edit: the priv rate for a full fare ticket is £71.25 so with the 11% discount it's fractionally cheaper to buy the advance that the priv ticket. If the OP were to buy a Friends and Family railcard (and pay for the child), the railcard would pay for itself on this trip alone (2 adults, 1 child) and there would still be a saving.
