It's irritating there's no "definite" answer available from anyone; even the individual TOCs are contradictory.
Case in point, the Milton Keynes Central - East Croydon services.
1.) First class is available along the entire route - Southern's customer team, via email.
2.) First class is declassified between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction - On-board guard.
3.) There is no first class on this service. - Another on-board guard.
