Well I never. They're certainly part of the Edinburgh - Glasgow fleet that later received Scotrail livery.

Given that in 1979 the coaches would have been virtually brand new (3/4 years old), I wonder if this is some sort of ECS move (Quite possibly from Derby to Craigentinny? Although a "Deltic" does seem like unusual traction for a move onto the Midland Region, even though they did work further afield following the intorduction of HSTs on the ECML) that didn't require the Deltic to be providing train supply to the carriages, given the Deltics well known inability to provide power to the later air-con mark 2s and mark 3s without the risk of flashovers unless suitable modifications were carried out, as was done on the East Coast mark 2 fleet. I can't see any passengers on board, and it looks distinctly as if the lights are switched off in the TSO, which suggests an ECS movement.

That photo is quite a find!

Take a look at the bogies and underframe on the Mark 3 coaches and clearly they have already seen some use
Equally, the SC designations would have been fitted by Craigentinny

More likely some sort of event on (Wednesday) 05 September 1979, although why southbound only...
Possibly to attend the funeral of Lord Mountbatten, again though why the train comes back ECS the following day I don't quite understand with that

Finally, it may be a proving run to show how a Class 55 can cope with a set of Mark 3A coaches against the APT running up the WCML

Perhaps a stock substitution on an Aberdeen-York service, and this is a return working, although coming into the station for departure (hence lights off)?

I'm sure I've seen a picture somewhere of a Deltic on the WHL with one the push-pull sets.

55021 did two trips from Edinburgh to Oban with this stock on specials in August 81. With regard the Mk 3s, I'm pretty sure this was discussed on the Deltic yahoo group some time back - I will see if I can find the stuff in a few days time when I have chance.

Found the details
Two Mark 3A coaches were trialled on the 08:00 Kings Cross - Edinburgh and 16:00 return, but that was November 1972 and through to January 1973

More than likely as above, these coaches were added for additional capacity for the events the previous day in London

That must have been coaches from the prototype batch for the HST project at such an early date: Selected from FOs 11000-3 and SOs 12000-3, which did indeed undergo a period of testing and trail running marshalled in standard loco hauled passenger trains to assess ride quality in late 1972.
