Is this a good job to do to train with a view to progressing onto mainline driving? The advert talks about servicing, fuelling and cleaning trains. How technical or mechanical would this role be? Any thoughts?

Yes, I read the description, but it differs significantly from the usual trainee train driver job adverts. Also, the money is considerably less. Also, it doesn't explain the "technical/refuelling/cleaning" element of the job role. Again, this is significantly different from the normal trainee role. The reason for my post was to learn from the experience of others who may have followed this career path. But thanks for re-posting the job description - it might prove helpful to others....

This isn't a Trainee Driver role, it is a Trainee Depot Driver. You do not get to drive outside the depot. For want of a better description, its a Shunter Driver job

There are some TOCs out there which only take on trainee drivers via the depot driving route e.g. EMT. I think Chiltern took on mainline trainees in the past but they tend to be fairly few and far between.

Chiltern is interested in hearing from qualified drivers so I imagine they are interested in quite a few of the ex-coal folk who are being made redundant. That's my tuppence though there are no doubt many on here who know more than I do.

£50,542 basic. Sunday's outside. Goes up to £51,755 from April 1st.

These jobs are for depot drivers though. It's a different job and it's a new grade within Chiltern. While it's entirely possible (and quite likely) that depot drivers will go on to the mainline after a few years with a clean record, I don't think you should approach the job as if it's basically a stop gap to mainline work.

Thanks_Cherry Picker, just weighting my options. Am going back to tfl as a csa but have an ongoing application for T/Op which I have done before. So maybe better stick to the devil I know.

While the Depot Driver job might not be as attractive as a mainline driving job financially - it certainly has its perks compared with mainline driving.

Generally:
- you have more interaction with colleagues than mainline drivers
- you don't have any passengers to deal with
- it can provide excellent "competency based" examples for future interviews
- it can be more "hands on" than mainline driving
- less stress (generally)

There are a fair few ex-mainline drivers who for whatever reason can't/won't drive mainline trains so have transferred over to depot work and have never looked back!

Termac are you still showing "Successful On Hold"?

My application is still showing that, I tried calling them today but the woman that deals with recruitment was off.

I didn't go to the assessment, accepted an offer from TFL, CSA. Starting next week hoping my T/Op application will progress successfully.

May I ask if anyone knows how Chiltern's enhanced pass requirements compare to the enhanced pass requirements of other TOCs?
