Internal report of 6C00 Clitheroe to Carlisle having derailed just outside Carlisle, somewhere near Petterill Bridge junction.
Initial details are that 7 wagons have derailed with 2 in the River Petterill.

A derailed freight train in the Carlisle area means some lines are blocked. As a result of this, trains may be cancelled.

This is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice for Northern

Effect on service:

Train services are unable to run between Carlisle and Hexham, and Carlisle and Skipton in both directions.

Services that run from Carlisle via Whitehaven are NOT affected.

Road transport has been requested to operate between Carlisle and Leeds, and Carlisle and Newcastle. More information will follow once confirmed.

Please see station information posters for bus pick up points.

Journey times may be extended by up to 90 minutes whilst travelling by road transport.

Hope the driver is OK, and anyone who may have been around at the time.

RTT says GBRF 66739 with 1600 tonnes of Building Materials.

There is at least 1 wagon leaning towards B&Q. There is also at least 2 other wagons upside down or down the bank in the river.
Any confirmation on the driver's condition? I've seen 1 person on twitter reporting they walked away uninjured, but no other reports.

Yes no injuries reported. He initially went back to investigate loss of air/unsolicited brake application.

Already being alleged / said by NR that this one is on them due to points problems. Possibly a spread.

I’ve seen this photo on Facebook of one of the wagons upside down and fallen off the track, potentially into a pit or a river:

Are Northern running a shuttle to Appleby at the moment and is there any news of when services will resume ?

To quote the northern website (https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/service-updates)

Where possible a train service will operate between Newcastle and Wetheral.

Where possible a train service will operate between Leeds/Skipton and Appleby. Langwathby, Lazonby & Kirkoswald and Armathwaite will not receive a train service

Road transport has been requested to operate over the affected routes

Pretty poor that Northern have pulled so many trains, as there's no reason why they couldn't operate the existing timetable to Wetheral/Appleby/Armathwaite. I know a few units stable in Carlisle so some gaps are inevitable, but it looks like they've pretty much pulled everything west of Hexham.

Hope the driver is OK and they get it sorted quickly.

Need crew to operate these. Not always the same crew back and forth.

They've explicitly stated their intention to run to Wetheral and Appleby, so presumably there is a reason they've not running as far as those stations yet. As for Armathwaite, is there a crossover nearby? From what I can see the next crossover is at Howe & Co sidings.

When the S&C was closed a few years ago (landslip or similar north of Armathwaite?) the trains ran from Appleby to Armathwaite and back using a single line. They crossed back over southbound somewhere just north of Appleby

The third one. What am I looking at? Is that a wagon stuck underneath a river bridge? (I'm not that familiar with the area!).
I believe the photographer is under the bridge and the wagon is resting against the side of the bridge.
