Opinons please on whether a Didcot Parkway - Tiverton Parkway SSR Not Via London would be valid to stop short at Reading on the return portion, on a weekend when the Berks & Hants is closed? Clearly there would be a doubleback between Didcot and Reading, but the Tiverton-Reading trains are usually booked via the B&H, and NRE shows it as valid.

Conversely, how likely would a Newbury-Tiverton SSR Not Via London ticket be accepted at Reading? Travel via Reading is permitted by an easement but would it be considered overriding to go via Reading on a train which calls at Newbury?

(All these tickets are the same price as the Reading-Tiverton SSR).

If the train calls at Newbury then I can't see how you can reasonably argue that you should be allowed to travel to Reading and back, as your ticket would cease to be valid at Newbury.

Why don't you get a zero fare excess in the return portion or just buy from Reading?

That's what I thought.

Tickets from Reading are subject to evening peak restrictions which I wish to avoid. I now plan to return on a Monday so will be using the Didcot ticket - out via Bristol and returning on the B&H (leaving from Didcot anyway so no time difference between routes on the way out).

I thought about an excess but I don't know what my chances would be at Tiverton. Reading ticket office is very good but I think asking for an overdistance excess when purchasing the ticket would be pushing it!
