I guess one of the constraints with having the photos retrievable are areas of limited mobile signal etc
I don’t think this is a blocker, the unpredictability of checks is combined with the uncertainty of whether the photo will or will not be available. Enforcement doesn’t need to be perfect and anyone identfied with a non-matching photo could be prosecuted for a very serious offence.

Because it could be distributed to others and added to Apple Wallets on their phones. Having the railcard in an App meas this can't happen.
There is the matter of the photograph(s) of course, so that would have to be doctored too if the Railcard was passed on.

Is that any more likely than with anything else stored on Apple wallets? Other retailers wouldn't allow use of it if that were the case.

It still can be distributed to others currently, as I could just give a railcard download code to my friend.
The download code can only be used once (some caveats for things like getting a new phone)

Am attempting to buy a senior railcard on my phone through Trainpal at the moment. I've triggered the payment through my bank phone app but the app has been showing 'Paying'... for about 45 minutes now and I can't unfreeze it. However, the payment amount has registered in my credit card online.

Have tried to contact Trainpal's customer service through the website - no response yet.

Just bought one and it seems to show fine with airplane mode on. It would be ideal if someone found a way to transfer the card to the official app though.

My attempts were eventually successful, though TrainPal's customer service isn't the most helpful. You will probably need your bank's app installed on your phone and make sure that any cards on it are up to date, otherwise the whole thing gets hung up at the payment stage.
