Currently all lines are blocked between Paddington and Slough due to damage to the overhead electric wires.

Does anyone have anymore information on this and what caused it?

Thanks.

2nd night in a row as well! Monday was a person hit by a train (not a pleasent event for all involved), and tonight the wires coming down. I've been caught up in both - so the commute has been fun this week.

Any bets on what Wednesdays disruption will be? Fiver says points failure!

Has the OLE on all four tracks been brought down?

Don’t know, 5Z65 was on the Down Main but there is no power between Paddington & Maidenhead.
Journey check is saying (@23.27) all lines blocked - no trains running between Paddington & Slough.

Current information on GWR Journeycheck:
Cancellations to services between London Paddington and Reading

Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between London Paddington and Reading some lines are closed.
Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
Customer Advice
Since around 19:30 Tuesday evening virtually no train service has been able to operate between London Paddington and Reading in either direction owing to the damage to the overhead wires. This has led to widespread disruption with trains initially stranded in various locations owing to loss of overhead power and diesel powered services unable to bypass the disabled electric trains.

The position this morning is that all lines remain closed between London Paddington and Slough with the possibility that two of these four lines will be available during the afternoon.

#######################################################################
Customers intending to travel to or from intermediate stations between London Paddington and Slough are advised NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL BY TRAIN until such time that confirmation has been published that the route has been reopened.

Note that between Slough and London Paddington no alternative road transport other than scheduled bus / Underground / train operators services on parallel routes will operate.

A limited train shuttle service will operate Slough - Reading - Didcot Parkway.

Those customers from London seeking to travel to Reading or west thereof are advised to travel to London Waterloo and travel on South Western Railway services to Reading from where main line services will restart.
#######################################################################

Customers travelling to / from the Oxford area are advised to use Chiltern Railways services to / from London Marylebone.

Customers travelling to destinations in Devon and Cornwall are advised to travel via London Waterloo either to Reading or via Salisbury to interchange with West Country services at Exeter St Davids.

Customers travelling to destinations in the Worcester area may travel from London Euston to Birmingham New Street on Virgin West Coast services and then from Birmingham New Street to Worcester on West Midlands Railway services.

Note that with the reduced frequency of services many trains are expected to be very busy.
Further Information
An update will follow within the next 2 hours.

I’m hearing that yet again, a large number of customers have been stuck on stranded trains well in excess of the target time. It should have been fairly obvious based on past experience that overhead line equipment jobs aren’t done quick and therefore detrainments should have been started sooner.

Trains on the alternative Reading-Waterloo route are also affected by a signalling fault at Earley, until 1100 according to NRE.
Not a great day for Reading commuters.

Is this the first wires down situation on the GWML.... probably not but it still seems to be fairing quite well compares the the ECML?

It would appear that all 4 lines are affected and they are all under possession this morning. That section of OLE is headspan so the wires are not mechanically separated as they would be on a portal system.

All the new electrification west of Airport Jn is portal.

If only everything in life was as reliable as an HST - they wouldn't have brought the wires down!

Because its a class 800 is it the only train fitted with a Pantograph at risk of bringing the wires down..... Next you will be blaming the shambles that is Brexit on the hard seats.

Incredibly, neither BBC or ITV Wales are reporting that no trains are running east of Reading. This has also led to some GWR cancellations for commuters within south Wales - no doubt resulting in them all trying to get on board the short Transport for Wales Trains.

I note that it is headline news in the BBC London insert into ‘Breakfast’ and BBC Bristol have also mentioned it in their insert. Presumably the Welsh based broadcasters think it is nothing to do with then as it has happened in England? (Had they bothered to inform the people of Wales, I bet a lot of them would be using their cars to get to Cardiff or wherever).

This section of the GWML is headspan, the same as the majority of the ECML. As fas as I'm aware, there's hasn't be a dewirement of the contact wire on series 1 on the GWML yet - but I could be wrong.

Anyone have any more info on what stock caused this?

As stated above, it was an 802. Just been untangled and moved into Southall Yard

RTT shows 5Z64 arriving on time at Paddington at 19:11 and then the forward movement to North Pole being cancelled. Sure this is the culprit?

It was more likely to ba caused by the wiring than a train, - particularly a new one. Old headspan wiring is not the most reliable way to keep conductor wires within their envelope.
