Can someone explain what the box above this distant signal is?
The letters say "BU"
The line is disused, single track and this board appears prior to a stop sign at a level crossing.

Is the level crossing a user worked barrier crossing? If so, then BU will stand for 'Barriers Up'. They are used on the Tarka Line at Eggesford. The driver operates the crossing, drives the train over the crossing and the barriers should raise automatically after the train has passed - at which point the BU sign will light up informing the driver then the crossing barriers have raised. If the sign doesn't light up when the train reaches it, the driver will need to go back and manually raise the barriers.

Ah it makes sense now, there is a crossing about 300 metres before this sign that is a barrier crossing. However the next one is a gated level crossing that's not automatic. So I'm guessing this refers to the first crossing.

Thanks for the help there!

This is used at Llandrindod on the HOW line as well and it is correctly mentioned barriers up but nothing at all to do with the distant signal., it is to inform the driver that the barriers have raised on the LC, if the sign does not illuminate the driver will need to inform the contrilling signaller
