Do the railways need a separate police force

I would perhaps argue that BTP should in fact become a national force for ALL transport, taking the roads policing off local forces for instance to allow them to concentrate on other crimes and for BTP to specialise purely in transport policing, whatever mode that may be.

This might cause a problem for some local forces, as their traffic police also perform other roles. E.g. in Cumbria, the roads unit doubles-up as the armed response unit for the county.
