The US are currently firing chemical weapons at women and children over the border with another country.

US authorities on Sunday temporarily shut the San Ysidro border crossing, one of the world's busiest, after a group of hundreds of migrants from Central America evaded a phalanx of Mexican police, crossed a small river and marched down a side street in front of a pedestrian crossing.

With helicopters circling overheard, US border authorities fired tear gas and rubber bullets as some of the marchers approached the United States at a metal fence where train tracks run through. At least one person crossed through the barrier and was detained by a US border agent, according to an eyewitness.

The marchers were close to the Chaparral pedestrian border crossing shortly after going across a river that runs next to it. The group continued marching away from the border crossing. They then pushed in the direction of the vehicle border crossing and another pedestrian crossing in Tijuana a few minutes away. Mexican federal police had blocked the road where cars usually enter Mexico from the US with a large metal gate, and it seemed unlikely the migrants could have passed through it. Mexican federal police quickly cordoned off the area, making access impossible.

But it was the first confrontation between the caravan and US authorities and came just one day after US troops had conducted a training exercise at the San Ysidro crossing, according to photos posted on a US military Facebook page shortly after Sunday's confrontation took place.

It was not immediately known whether any of the US troops that have been sent to California to support US Customs and Border Protection were nearby during the confrontation, however. US military spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment.

The marchers left the Tijuana stadium where many have been living for days and walked toward the border, carrying signs that said "Donald Trump, Christ loves you" while others held US, Mexican, and Honduran flags painted onto pieces of cloth.

At one point, Mexican police urged the marchers to turn back, saying they were risking their opportunity to ever enter the United States.

The caravan in Tijuana has grown to 5,157, according to local government officials. That number is expected to grow as other groups of migrants arrive.

Julio Ulloa, 29, helped paint some of the posters and signs for the march. He said the members of the caravan marched to the border walkway in the hopes of asking President Trump for some type of permission to enter the United States.

"Trump says he won't open the door but God has the last word," Ulloa told BuzzFeed News.

Many people inside the sports complex have grown frustrated with the long delay to apply for asylum, Ulloa said. Some have slept within view of the border wall and the United States. They were cold and there wasn't enough food and water for everybody, he said.

The Honduran native said the caravan had been well received through its entire trip up Mexico, but they felt unwelcome in Tijuana, pointing to an anti-immigrant march that took place recently and statements from the local government about limited resources.

"People are frustrated," Ulloa said. "We barely fit and there are more people coming."

I hope you're not seriously suggesting that using deadly force against asylum seekers should even be a consideration ?

I was being facetious - but it is questionable if they are even likely to be genuine refugees. It's much more likely that they are economic migrants.

With respect, that statement leads me to believe that you don't have a clear understanding of Central American politics and society.

And so they deserve to be shot with rubber bullets and to hell with the consequences?

To paraphrase Douglas Adams:

Rubber Bullets: Mostly Harmless

OK so they can be quite painful, as can tear gas, but neither cause lasting harm. Edit: Most of the time, anyway.

Wikipedia states that between 1970 to 1975, about 55,000 rubber bullets were fired by the British Army in Northern Ireland which resulted in three people being killed. In 1975, they were replaced by plastic bullets. In Northern Ireland over 35 years (1970–2005), about 125,000 rubber and plastic bullets were fired—an average of ten per day—causing 17 deaths.

So I assume you'd be willing for us to test that on you then?
As deltic has posted above, rubber bullets are deadly. Granted not all the time, but to suggest that they are "mostly harmless" is pretty damn misleading.

From wikipedia (yes I know, but you can follow the source to the journal who published the research), "However, they may cause bone fractures, injuries to internal organs, or death. In a study of injuries in 90 patients injured by rubber bullets, 2 died, 18 suffered permanent disabilities or deformities and 44 required hospital treatment after being fired upon with rubber bullets".

I'd hardly say a greater than 20% (more than a 1 in 5) chance of dying or receiving permanent disabilities or deformities counts as "mostly harmless". By pure numbers (the majority were fine) then maybe, but certainly I wouldn't like those chances!

Donald Trump is mad about closure of 5 GM plants in Canada and USA. He wants them to remain open and close the plant in China. Are people willing to pay American wages; meaning that transportation objects become more expensive.

1 Reason for GM to close plants are the new (extra) steel tariffs since Donald Trump is in power. How a snake bites in its own tail.

You do realise that very few cars are exported from China to America, right? Chinese production is mostly for the domestic market so they aren't going to be affected much at all. Most production goes the other way - and is under threat because of (a) higher steel prices; and (b) higher import tarifs.

How did those come about again?

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Rumor this morning that John Kelly is about to quit. His role as Trump's sole mollifying influence has prevented further insane decisions. Between this and Mueller on the cusp of, well, something..it's about to get very interested indeed.

Individual-1, who went on to become President, will probably be a little worried.

The US is having a government shutdown:

US government partially shuts down over border wall row
A partial US government shutdown has taken effect after US lawmakers failed to break a budget impasse.
President Donald Trump, who has to sign off on any deal, is insisting at least $5bn (£4bn) be included for his long-promised wall along the Mexican border.
In the absence of a deal, funding for about a quarter of US federal agencies lapsed at midnight (05:00GMT Saturday).
Both the House and Senate are set to be back in session at noon on Saturday (17:00GMT) to try to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, nine of 15 federal departments, including State, Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture and Justice are now partially shutting down.
Hundreds of thousands of federal employees will have to work unpaid or be put on temporary leave. This is the third time US federal funding has lapsed so far this year, although the other two were brief.

Are we going to worry that amongst the departments are; homeland security, justice and transportation.

I can appreciate that agriculture and parks and forests are not important over Christmas but things like homeland security...

Essential workers (airport security, military, etc.) will continue working, though they may not be paid depending on how long the shutdown lasts.

Though, I do find that a Federal Government shutdown is a strange way to get Mexico to pay for the wall.

It`s interesting that virtually all his original appointed cabinet have since left his government (make of this what you will) was elected and there have been new appointments almost weekly it seems. I really think he isn`t in control and his body language seems to indicate this. Who`s he really getting angry with one wonders. He may appear bullish and no nonsense to certain people but he`s really very week and a poor businessman. He went bankrupt in 1991 for 4 billion usd. He was bailed out by several consortiums who recognised his potential as a figurehead of sorts. Imagine this 4bn almost 30 years ago doesn`t bear the hallmarks of a shrewd businessman. He`s a good promoter, of himself usually and he is charismatic but as usual in these cases the guy's an empty barrel.
