I have noticed that on some drivers bags / rucksacks there is a red tab that appears can be pulled. Does anybody know its function? Thanks.

Its a quick release. If you get tangled up and the train starts moving pull the tab and the should straps come free.

Is this the same reason why some of the hi-vis waistcoats I see staff wearing have poppers on the shoulder?

Yes-all railway standard hi vis-es will rip off completely with either poppers or Velcro

The "rip cords" on the bags also give moments of amusement as you sneak up on unsuspecting newbies!

Clothes being completely ripped off with poppers sounds like a normal Saturday night down Canal Street :)

At least they stay on longer there than they do in Brighton. :p

Back on topic, roughtly when did such things become a H&S requirement?

Not strictly true, LUL or whatever they are called use non rip ones sometimes, as do some contractors such as Thales.

Plus coats and waistcoat style ones don't tend to rip.

Indeed - my fully-compliant orange hi-vis waterproof jacket has no poppers or velcro to help it separate, but I am led to believe it will disintegrate if it gets caught in a train or some other moving object.

Fortunately, I have not had cause to see if this is the case!

Only my heritage hivis has poppers. None of my work hivi's have poppers or rip sections, despite the potential to be working on a railway (trains usually stopped though!).

Really? Says in a manual that it must be 'breakaway' type.

LU hi viz vests have Velcro to tear apart in to two front and one back portion rather than having poppers. LU train operators' rucksacks don't have anything out of the ordinary!

Yes my regulations book also says that they must be breakaway type HVV but honestly, I've seen a friend with LUL HVV and it's not breakaway, neither was mine when I got given given one by a friend in preservation, I can only assume they were obsolete versions no longer in circulation.

That said I often see Thales engineers with non rip ones, don't know why they are issued them. They may not have PTS or something?
