The following web site shows the location and photographs of the station-

http://www.railbrit.co.uk/location.php?loc=Dundee Esplanade

After leaving Dundee station
next station was Dundee Esplanade
passing over the Tay Bridge until Wormit Junction
.....with the line eastwards going immediately into Wormit station before heading towards Newport-on-Tay, Tayport, etc
Heading southwards.
...the next station was St. Fort

The first station south of the Tay Bridge, according to RailScot, was St Fort. The first out to Perth was Magdalen Green.

There are some pictures on RailScot Paul.

(from caption) Closed to passengers in 1939 the station was later adapted for use in its current role as the works and maintenance centre for the Tay Bridge.

And another
(from caption) The 0955 GNER Aberdeen - Kings Cross HST on the climb from Dundee up to the Tay Bridge about to pass through the former Esplanade station on 6 March 2007. ...

So it must have been on the main line, just after the bridge as in this picture from which that caption quoted above was taken.

This one shows it more clearly.

Wormit station on the Newport branch on the other side of the bridge would have been the nearest station along.

Interesting, I had always assumed this was Tay Bridge Railway Station, but it seems Tay Bridge Station is the former name of the current Dundee Station.

Originally trains took the Ferry from Broughty Ferry to Tayport then headed south to leuchars (Old Station).

The line via Newport and Wormit used the first Tay bridge. The Tayport-Leuchars (Old Station) fell out of use when the direct line from Leuchars via St. Fort was built. St. Fort was also the junction for the line to Perth via Lindores and Newburgh. There was a triangle junction to the south of St. Fort station. You can still see the remains of a bridge on the north side of the triangle, in the fields. Nothing remains of the south side of the triangle.

If I remember there was a signal box on the south end of the Tay bridge which would have been the junction for the branch to Newport and Tayport. St fort station masters house was where the A92 crossed over the railway near a hotel now closed.

If you look at an ordnance survey map clues to the Newburgh line seem to follow south of A92 to kilmany then westwards to north of A92 before crossing again at Luthrie then following A92 to Parbroath crossroads. Then south of A913 to Lindores then Newburgh.
The line is fairly easy to follow as cuttings and embankments still exist some brickwork where bridges have been dismantled and then made safe by building walls on the top.

In the 60's I used to visit all the stations in the Dundee area and I cannot remember of the esplanade being used, always looked unsafe to me in a poor state of repair. It was built onto the main line, old timers in the railway told me that that was the old Caledonia line but nor sure if this is Correct, maybe Bill will correct?
