I have wrapped my brains, but cannot see any viable split ticketing options.

I wish to travel on the 0833 King's Cross- Leeds only to Grantham (train only calls Stevenage in between) and then do a bus Explorer and return from Leeds back to KX on the 19:45 departure (calls Wakefield, Doncaster, Peterborough).

However, the return train does not call at Grantham- only Peterborough, which the outward train does not call at, so there no common stop for which to do a split ticket.

I know I could on the return, "step back" at Doncaster onto the next EC train (which would call at Grantham) but that arrives KX half an hour later than the 1945.

Anything I have missed? I want walk up flexible tickets, no advances.
