Edinburgh Tram developments

Curious how the validators will work at Edinburgh airport, I used the tram last month at the rediculous price they charge to go from Gateway to the Airport, had my ticket checked once on the tram, then twice by two separate staff between the tram and the exit of the tram station at the airport... They are very keen to make sure you have a ticket there!
The idea is that if you tap out at the airport you pay the airport fare. If you don't tap out, but have tapped in, you pay the airport fare. You wouldn't need tapping out at all if it wasn't for the airport zone. Tail wagging the dog really.

Out of curiosity, how did Edinburgh Trams calculate the fare when using the NEC or Young Scot Cards in order to claim for the operator reimbursement? You only had to tap the card on the validators when getting on the tram, but they were still valid in the airport zone.

Edinburgh Trams receive zero reimbursement for NEC passengers. Currently only City of Edinburgh NECs are accepted at the operators own cost.

This part of the sentence: "Currently only City of Edinburgh NECs are accepted" is not true.
Based on this page of edinburgh trams website: https://edinburghtrams.com/scottish-national-entitlement-card
Please note, Scottish National Entitlement Cards that do not have City of Edinburgh Council as the issuing Local Authority are not valid on tram services.
It seems that it generally is true with one exception that does not apply to the vast majority of NEC holders.
However, blind or visually impaired holders of Scottish National Entitlement Cards issued by other local authorities can also travel free on trams.

Don't want to get too off topic, but does anyone know how are Edinburgh Trams (or rail operators) reimbursed for visually impaired NEC holders by Scottish Government, if at all? Can't find any information online.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
I would assume that because the concession card is scanned and validated they are simply able to charge back in the same way as any bus operator. For trains. I would again expect that some kind of flat rate and your payment is agreed with operators for the carriage of visually impaired passengers and that now scottrail is effectively nationalised that this only applies to Avanti West coast, London, northeastern Railway and cross country. Certainly my experience on scottrail services since moving south 2 years ago has been that at both stations and on trains. They haven't even been interested in the ticket that I have bought to pay for my journey and simply pass me by. I am not brave enough to test this by not purchasing and then potentially being prosecuted

Similar experience with the disabled persons railcard - very rarely do I get asked to show it even if the inspector just forced someone else to buy a new ticket for not having a (different kind of) railcard.

Visually impaired NEC holders was certainly the only non-City of Edinburgh issued card exception I could think of.
Good to know - I'm sure took the bus once from the airport instead of the tram because at the time buses accepted the card but trams didn't.

Most people who have one here probably know, but if you have an eye+1 NEC card you can now take a companion free on Scotrail services from 1st April 2025, and also on Edinburgh Trams.

I think I have found the answer on reimbursement, that there is no reimbursement for visual impairment NEC cards: Information on other concessionary travel and discounted schemes

The Scottish National Blind Persons' Scheme

The Scottish National Blind Persons’ Scheme is also delivered on the National Entitlement Card (NEC).
This is a voluntary arrangement between local councils, COSLA and participating transport operators and provides free rail and ferry travel throughout Scotland for cardholders who have the eye symbol on their NEC indicating they have a card due to a sight impairment.
You can find more information on the rail element of the scheme on the ScotRail website.
So I think no reimbursement for Scotrail, Edinburgh Trams and Calmac

It's official - TOTO is coming on Monday 19 May! ‍

When Tap on, Tap off launches, you'll be able to use your contactless card or device to tap on at the platform validator to start your journey, and then you'll need to tap off at the validator on the platform again when you get off the tram.

More info: https://edinburghtrams.com/news/tap-tap-launch-date-announced
It is excellent that this system is finally being introduced and with automatic fare capping in tandem with Lothian Buses.

It appears there will be only one type of reader which users will have to tap for both starting and ending their journey; in basic cases this would be simple to work out e.g. device taps at location A, 20 minutes elapses, device taps location B: the system would interpret the first tap as the "start" tap and the second as the "finish". I'm unsure how the system would calculate for incomplete journeys though (where the card has not been tapped out). For example if the device is tapped once at A, then wait 25 minutes, then once at B, then wait 65 minutes, then once at A again, how will the system know which journey was incomplete (did the user forget to tap out at the end of journey 1 or tap in at the start of journey 2)? Or does it not matter since both journeys are the same price anyway?

This could be further complicated if the user remembers later that they've forgotten and tries to fix it themselves e.g. tap at A, wait 180 minutes, tap at B, wait 0 minutes, tap at B (i.e. tap again immediately), wait 20 minutes, tap at A. Does anyone know how the system will deal with this?

Are there any trams currently out of service long term?

There's three I still need. One is out today (264) and one of the others has worked this week. But I can't find any mention of the third (260) having been in service for quite some time.

269 is out for a while after it's accident at the Gyle. Other than that it's just scheduled maintenance. The Robbie Williams concert you're likely to see them all out.

is that this accident: https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-officers-race-car-tram-28874864? (I don't recall any others)
If so, does it really take 14 months to repair a tram?
It won't be that one as according the to the british trams online fleet list the capital radio tram in that news article is 262 not 269. Also from British trams online 269 was in use in march so whatever has has stopped it has occured in the last couple of months.

Has anyone else had any experience with the new TOTO readers? They seem pretty unreliable - at 3 different stops I've had to walk to different readers finding one that would work (trying different cards - so it's not my card which is the issue), and they are warning that concession cards can't be read. Given they seemed to have a long testing period, it does make me wonder how rigorous the testing was...

I used it for the first time on Sunday at Bankhead, Haymarket and the Gyle. Which I had no issues, though my wife at the Gyle had to use a different reader as it wasn't validating, worked ok when she used the same one as me though.

Well the first time I used TOTO, I got overcharged (yes, I did tap off when necessary; I think I'm pretty switched on with using public transport - so I wonder how many people who are less familiar with public transport will have problems). Complaint currently in with Lothian Transport to get a refund...

Make sure you’ve complained directly with Edinburgh Trams as Lothian Buses have nothing to do with the Trams. Will save you being bounced around and having to start again.

is this the case even if your first tap on is on a bus, but then subsequently use a tram?

I used the tram last Wednesday and Thursday Bankhead to Haymarket return. Tapped on and off on each journey. Was charged £2.20 on wednesday then £4.40 £7.90 and £10.00 on Thursday. Seemed to be an issue on both days as wednesday the conductors couldnt check if the card had been validated. Spoke to Edinburgh trams and have been refunded £10.00 but and waiting on the balance. clearly a few teething issues with it. will be reverting to paper tickets again for the time being

I'm currently in a conversation with them. I was charged a £5 and a £10 fare - they've said they'll refund £7.80 as a gesture of goodwill, but not the full £10 - even though I've provided the evidence that I had the correct tickets for all my journeys and that the whole £10 was an overcharge and should be a refund.

Yes, I'll also stick with paper tickets for now (or, you can buy a set of 10 city zone tickets for £35 (this seems to have recently gone up from £30) on the "et" app - which is different to the "Bus and Tram" app!)
