It's the description/definition. Think about it for a moment.

Well, to quote the late Sir Thomas Beecham, "The English don't really appreciate music, they just like the noise it makes".
Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for people who can't appreciate words. Look at this way. If you went to see a play and you couldn't hear what the actors were saying would you still enjoy it because the scenery and costumes were great?
I don't have a narrow definition. Scat singing - a development of jazz - is not in the same category because it doesn't use words.

The quote of the late Sir Thomas Beecham that I link to Elton John and his music is the one the he made about Wagner and his music.

"His music has wonderful moments, but terrible half hours".

Rammstein!

Can't understand a word Till Lindermann says yet the music is awesome and the shows they put on are spectacular.

What a pity I can't go to Download this year...

I'm impressed with anyone who can sing in German, it isn't a language that lends itself to conventional rhythmic norms. Rammstein are great, and with some rudimentary a-level German you can understand most of it.

There's plenty of songs in Welsh by the Super Furry Animals that I really like despite not understanding a word!

So Beethoven's 5th, Tchaikovsky's 1892, Bruch's Violin Cocerto etc. are not worthy of appreciation because they have no words?

They're not songs - you do know what a song is don't you?
Tchaikovsky's 1892? Do tell.

All this reminds me of a story told by a lyricist whose name I cannot remember. He was in the loo and the chap next to him was humming a tune. Lyricist chap says "I wrote that song", other chap says "I thought XXXX (can't remember the name) wrote it". Lyricist says "he wrote the tune, I wrote the words". Other chap says "I wasn't humming the words".

I see he has ten godchildren, I hope he's setting an appropriate moral standard for them.

This may be off topic but I understand the high court has ruled that it is illegal for primary school children in England to read Scottish newspapers.
