More that the DfT won't sign off the extra cost of a refurbishment with the new seats. As far as the 170s are concerned there's not much wrong with the seats they have now anyway, sure the ScotRail seat moquette is looking tired on those units but there's nothing wrong with the seats themselves.
Not that I’m complaining - the 3 car ex-GA /2s still have their extra comfy declassified FC seats! 8-)

Pessimistic as much as I am over this issue, unless EMR/DfT has signed legally-binding refurbishment contracts by now, I really do think that we can’t rule out the possibility of there being no refurbishment of any the 170s or 360s - i.e. no seat cover replacements, no plug sockets, absolutely nothing.

I can see the DfT stating that they’ve done enough for EMR such as allowing the modified LEANs for the 810s (and the 810s themselves!), 4 extra 170s (I think taking on the TfW 170s works out at 4 more 170s overall than previously planned?) and retention of the 158 fleet. So, no money for anything else.

They'll get plug sockets and seat covers, as well as WiFi where it isn't present.

I don't see anything else occurring.

What colour seat covers are they likely to get? Will they all get seat covers of the same colour? If they are all to be covered in the same colour what colour is neutral enough to match all the different interior colour schemes? It does make me appreciate what a good job Stagecoach did when they quite quickly refurbished the mixture of units EMT received at the beginning of their franchise.

EMR’s head of fleet has said there will be one, just heavily scaled down compared to what was originally planned (i.e. only seat cover/carpet replacements and plug sockets) to be more in line with the “change in circumstances”.

Yes, TfW are losing all their 170s to EMR. This means that even with the extra Mark 4 sets, TfW will have to keep 8 (I think) 153s until at least 2027 (!) when I hope they can get some 170s (again!) from ScotRail, displaced by SR's fleet replacement. At the same time, maybe some more ex-SR 170s could go to EMR to replace the EMR 158s?

The whole point of TfW getting rid of their 170s was that they lacked the necessary route clearance for some of their proposed routes such as the HoW Line, so I doubt they’ll get more again sadly.

There shouldn't need to be work done. It's already planned for the 197s to be cleared for Heart of Wales. Mostly for stock moves if the Marches were blocked but it means they will be cleared.

one would hope in that case either by 2030 there will be an extra order of 197s or they will be cascaded

Six seems rather a lot. Currently there's only one or two per day being used on Hereford via Worcester services. The awful 172s have taken over relentlessly.
Minimum 3 units a day used off Worcester. Need to allow a maintenance spare & probably a couple in reserve whilst the 196’s bed in. Hence 6 staying.

Does anyone happen to have seen 170272 in the last week or so at all? Following the tip-off on here that it was out and about on Sunday 13th Nov working the Derby-Crewe circuit, I followed it on Real Time Trains for the remainder of the day, where it stabled over night at Crewe. It then came out first thing and stayed on Crewe-Newark services all day. The final run back though, a terminating service at Nottingham should have then seen the unit work 2L88 to Leicester followed by 5L88 back to Etches Park, however this trip was worked by 170511. Here the trail went cold and I couldn't see it after Nottingham. I'm pretty confident it'll either have been on Eastcroft or Etches Park since, however not sure which and when it moved. If anyone has any info on what it's up to or where it is, that'd be greatly appreciated. Many thanks and best wishes, Phil

RTT has no allocation so I'm not sure.

I think it has been explained previously that the traincrew paperwork for EMR has "Class 170" competence. That means they would need to change all the crew competencies to add Class 171 - yes, we all know a 171 is a 170 with a different coupler, but in the world of safety critical competencies that doesn't hold much water. Therefore, the decision was taken to renumber them back as 170s, but as 1709xx so that the Dellner fitted sets were still differentiated.
Not the case, although a valid reason. They were renumbered to 170s to allow them to travel from their southern depot on the chosen route. Similar situation though, the route is cleared for 170s but not 171s even though they’re the same body shell…

Originally to 170/4s again by southern, renumbered to /9 by EMR to distinguish with planning so they don’t assign them in multiple or away from RHL
