I'm really beginning to think this, and maybe the Etias, will never happen. Just too complex a structure on such busy UK/Schengen routes, and even if introduced there's so much that can go wrong delaying everybody.
Example, front of queue a pax tries to use egate without ETIAS approval...hold up for everyone behind. Or the system breaks down.

According to the BBC ETIAS has been delayed further.

That isn't especially news though? The following article from August 2022


Example, front of queue a pax tries to use egate without ETIAS approval...hold up for everyone behind.

That's a queue problem - for example at Heathrow each e-gate has an individual queue so one person getting rejected delays the people in that specific queue

But some other places have a single queue for 5 or 10 gates, so one person not getting through a gate doesn't delay anyone else - the problem with this is that people at the front of the queue usually aren't paying attention and don't notice when the furthest e-gates become free

Yes, but these additional complications mean there's more that can go wrong.
Between countries with no border control (eg Germany/France) how many are held up in an immigration queue? None!

So the simpler border controls are, the less can go wrong and the faster we and goods get through.
