The Rams at Wembley: Extra train organised to take Derby County fans to Championship play-off final

DERBY County fans looking to travel to Wembley Stadium by train can now catch an extra one running on Saturday morning.

East Midlands Trains said they had already added extra carriages to several of their trains running from Derby to London in the hours before the Rams play QPR in the Championship play-off final.

But bosses at the train operator said they had now arranged for an extra train to take people from the city at 8.35am and arrive at London St Pancras at 10.33am.

They said these arrangements meant there were more than 1,600 extra seats on their Derby to London trains on Saturday morning - including 400-plus on the extra eight-carriage train

Must be the Saturday spare HST working it - but as for the extra vehicles added to other trains are there Saturday spare Meridians?

There never seems to be too much of a problem for EMT strengthening trains at that time on a Saturday morning. They have usually managed to strengthen a number of services in the past when they have had their Red Dot Days. They usually double up Meridians as I don't think they are used as intensively on a Saturday as they are during the week.

EMT ran two trains extra for the match. When I went to watch Sheff Wednesday play Brighton at Highbury in 83 there were over 20 specials all with 12 carriages. Putting on two extra trains is virtually a waste of time when Derby are taking 37000 fans to London. I believe that over 200 coaches are going to the match. In days gone by there would have been at least 20 specials going from derby the Wembley all at reduced prices. There is plenty of rolling stock available for hire even now. The TOCS can't be bothered. The police actually prefer specials to coaches.

Can't be bothered, or can't justify it? The stock might be available - I don't know - but where do the crew come from, and who pays for them to come from there? Where do the paths come from to run twenty specials into London? Even if it was a practical proposal, i doubt it'd cover its own costs - so the rest of us would effectively be subsidising it.

Have you considered there is far more timetabled trains from Derby/Sheffield to London in 2014 than in 1983?

Yeah why didn't EMT run 20 specials?! I'm sure there would've been ample space in the MML platforms at St Pancras......

It's also worth noting that EMT also added a lot of capacity to normal Derby to London services. They had 2 double sets running on Sheffield services. And used all but 3 of their 222s, and all but 1 of their HSTs on Saturday...

And some Derby fans live in Nottingham and Stoke rather than Derby itself, so they would travel down by trains from those cities anyway.
