Would it still be best to get it reprinted to avoid situations like this again or could I just put it down to pure "jobsworthiness" of the G4S staff?

You can get it replaced free of charge, once. I advise you also ask for a free ticket wallet and try not to take it out once its in there.

There is no limit on the number of times a faded railcard can be replaced. ie if the replacement fades (which has happened) it can itself be replaced.

I assume its a Disable you have got 91107 ntherefore if you contact the Disabled Rail Card People they will send you one free of Charge, TH e booking office Personel at Preston should not have writen the date on this is defacing it for which you can be made responsible for as it is prperty of Rail Travel Made Easy not Virgin or any TOC and you are Resonsible for what ever happens to that ticket if i wa syou I would make a complaint to Virgin Trains.

if the date is unreadable, get a lighter and heat the back of the railcard and hey presto date appears and stations can issue you with a replacement as i have issued loads when you can't read the date

Nope, it's a 16-25, probably a factor as to why they keep giving me so much grief about it. It's weird, no Guard has any problem with it, no ticket office staff have any problem with it, it's just the staff at Piccadilly.

I'll bear that in mind, next time I'm at a staffed station I'll get it reprinted.

Yep they fade on their own... the thermal print is rubbish. I did catch someone with a 14 months out-of-date one some time ago. Which was still just visible, backed up by a ticket enquiry swipe on my machine.

I once got grief for having not countersigned my 16-25. The guard helpfully provided me with a Biro and watched me sign it before moving on. I quite enjoyed his dutiful punctiliousness.

May I ask how you think a railcard becomes faded? It's not something which needs to go through barriers or even needs to removed from the ticket wallet. If you will insist on shoving other tickets over it/taking it out of the wallet daily, putting it in the washing machine or otherwise maltreating it then it will get damaged.

I bought a Southeastern Network Railcard back in March. I purchased it not because I use it mega-frequently, but because I go to London maybe 6 times a year, and it saves me quite a bit of money, even using it that infrequently.

Between March and August I'd used it about three times; three separate weekends where I'd gone to London, and it had been in my pocket, in its wallet, for the duration that I was using it, and apart from that, it remained on the mantelpiece in my bedroom. By August, it had faded so badly the date was so poorly legible so I felt compelled to buy a new one.

So in my case there was no maltreatment whatsoever.

With a similar level of use, my new one seems to be faring a lot better. I'm at a loss to explain that!! :)

Would the first one happen to have been in a Southeastern ticket wallet? That's what my railcard's in.

Yes. However my replacement railcard has gone into the same wallet, and it is still going strong! Like I said, I can't explain it!

The explanation we heard was to do with bad batch of ticket stock. Don't know if that was true reason or not.

To replace a railcard you should retain the receipt part of the leaflet you filled out which you gave in to the ticket office to issue the railcard and htey endorse it for you. This has the date of issue and expiry and station stamp to validate the replacement. =)
