Hello all, since most threads similar to this no longer let you post, I thought I should set up a new thread, for Fantasy TfL Train lines, which include the London Underground, Overground, Docklands Light Railway, Crossrail (Elizabeth Line), Cable Car and Trams, so post as you please.

That being said, here’s my Fantasy ideas:

DLR:
Gallions Reach Station is rebuilt and altered for new extensions East and south east.
Eastern extension includes:
Gallions Reach
Beckton Riverside
Creekmouth
Barking Riverside
Dagenham Vale
Dagenham Dock

South-east extension includes:
Gallions Reach
Beckton Riverside
Thamesmead West
Thamesmead
Abbey Wood
West Heath
Bexleyheath

Overground:

Barking Riverside to have direct interchange with new DLR

West Ealing - Greenford branch becomes part of the overground

Victoria Line:

Extended from Walthamstow to new stations at:
Whipps Cross
Snaresbrook
Redbridge
Ilford

Extended from Brixton to new stations at:
Herne Hill
West Dulwich
Sydenham Hill
Crystal Palace

I have a lot of ideas, I'll only go into one of them now:

A new line from Wimbledon to Chingford

Wimbledon
Wimbledon Park
Southfields
East Putney
Putney Bridge
Parsons Green
TUNNEL BEGINS
Fulham Broadway
Chelsea West
Kings Road Chelsea
Sloane Square
Victoria
Westminster
Waterloo
Blackfriars
Bank
Liverpool St
Shoreditch High St
Columbia Road
London Fields
Hackney Central
Clapton
TUNNEL ENDS
Lea Valley
St James Street
Walthamstow Central
Wood Street
Hale End
Highams Park
Chingford Hatch
Chingford

  • Rolling stock will be 20m x 8 coach Aventras with 3 doors per side of a carriage like the 345s. They will have fully longitudinal seating.
  • A 30tph service will run throughout the day with a service up to 40tph being possible.
  • All underground stations to have Platform Edge doors.
  • Uses the Wimbledon branch of the District line. The District line will terminate at Fulham Broadway in the current platforms and this line will surface between Fulham Broadway and Parsons Green.
  • Platform extensions on the Wimbledon branch to take place - at East Putney this will sever the link to the Windsor Lines.
  • On the Chingford branch it surfaces in the Lea Valley after the mainline to Stansted/Cambridge branches off. Clapton overground station closes which increases capacity for GA services.
  • This line also replaces the Waterloo and City line - it has more capacity per train and is faster since it doesnt have kinks like the Waterloo and City line does.
  • At Bank the platforms should be able to fit on the same level as the Central line platforms.

A reworked Chelsea - Hackney line ...see discussions on Crossrail 2. Someone on here might be able to help you.

The idea for my line was that it would compliment CR2, and that CR2 would run directly from Clapham Junction to Victoria instead of going round to Chelsea - it would make good sense to have both. Also I'd have Crossrail 2 serving Earlsfield instead of Tooting or Balham - the Northern line would become too overcrowded and journey times would be much faster if they werent doglegging to serve Tooting/Balham and Chelsea.

Why and how would West Ealing to Greenford be part of London Overground?

If you're extending the Victoria Line eastwards, Leytonstone Underground Station would be far more sensible as it's the junction where the two Central Line strands come together.

Why and how would West Ealing to Greenford be part of London Overground?
Admittedly, it does seem a little silly that people have to change from a TfL service to a franchised TOC to travel the short shuttle between West Ealing and Greenford. It would probably be better suited as part of Crossrail, given that this is how West Ealing will now be served, but it's not really the correct type of service to apply the Crossrail brand to.
It seems like it's the perfect type of service for LO, it's just in the wrong place.

For the eastern part of Crossrail 2 spurring from Hackney, I think it should go like this:

Hackney Central - Direct link to Overground and Hackney Downs Station. Platforms labelled A & B. Zone 2 station.

Stratford - New building directly under Westfield. Three exits, northern exit to Stratford International DLR, central exit directly to Westfield, and south exit directly to Stratford Regional Station. Platforms lettered A & B. Zone 2/3 station.

East Ham - Last core Station with A & B platforms, interchange with LU lines, completely underground. Situated north of current station.

Barking - Station redo to be done, new platform 9 as a bay platform for Crossrail 2 trains eastbound, sharing tracks with c2c platforms.

Dagenham Dock, Beam Park, Rainham, Purfleet, Ockendon, Chafford Hundred - Redo of station, Beam Park in Zone 5/6.

Upminster & Grays - Not much changed, except new platform each some terminating trains.

West Horndon, Laindon, Basildon - In a special fares zone with no oyster (like Reading), Basildon to get two new platforms

It seems like it's the perfect type of service for LO, it's just in the wrong place.
And, most relevantly, the wrong traction.

If it was wired, it would have been transferred along with the TfL Rail line it joins to - like the Romford-Upminster shuttle.

Because it is diesel it can't really be a micro fleet - and thus GW, or Chiltern (as were proposed to get it when the Windsor, Marlow and Henley branches were proposed for electrification - Greenford wasn't as they saw it as TfL's problem).

Way on down South London town
Extend the Waterloo and City south of Waterloo as an express Northern Line down to Morden.

Slim down Crossrail 2-run it from Finsbury Park (taking Great Northern Electric services) to Battersea to connect to the Victoria slows.

If we're really talking fantasy:

Restart work on the Fleet Line and Northern Heights Line!

I think that the Overground is very much a 'trundler' service - it stops at every station, and probably gets caught at each junction. Could express sections be introduced by doubling some of the track so that you can get a fast service around London without having to go into London?

Not at a sensible cost, no. Apart from a very short section in Camden, the railway formation is fully utilised, so additional tracks would require additional land. In London! You're talking umpteen billions, masses of destruction and hostility from most Londoners.

Even if done (as Railwaysceptic has pointed out, at great cost), what journeys would be quicker? Given the likely need to change twice to use the orbital line and the increased ability to change only once in Central London with projects like Crossrail and Thameslink not-2000, I doubt it's not many - remember that any journey arcing more than 2 radians (~115 degrees) is going to be shorter distance-wise via the centre.

Well as it is fantasy a few madcap ideas! * means interchange with existing station

Piccadilly Line
Split at Holborn, with new routes South and to the North East combing elements of the Chelsea-Hackney proposals; termination of Uxbridge branch at Ealing Broadway to increase capacity to Heathrow.
  • 'New' Piccadilly Line running from Heathrow/Ealing Broadway to Holborn (built out from original Brompton and Piccadilly Circus Railway), then new tunnels roughly North East serving:
    • Barbican*
    • Old Street*
    • Shoreditch Church
    • Dalston Junction*
    • Hackney Downs*
    • Hackney Wick*
    • Leyton*
    • Leytonstone*
    • then all stations to Hainault via Newbury Park (with that section of the loop taken over from the Central Line)
  • 'Strand' Line running from Cockfosters to Holborn (built out from original Great Northern & Strand Railway), then heads South to Aldwych on reopened section before extended again:
    • Temple*
    • Waterloo*
    • Millbank
    • Victoria*
    • Sloane Square*
    • Chelsea
    • Fulham Broadway*
    • then all stations to Wimbledon (taking over Upminster to Wimbledon services on the Wimbledon branch)

District Line
  • With Wimbledon branch services (from Upminster) gone, divert Ealing Broadway services to Uxbridge (swapped with Piccadilly Line, as above) to give a core alternate Uxbridge/Richmond to Upminster route.
  • Wimbledon - Earl's Court - Edgware Road route transferred to revised 'Circle' (see below)

CrossRail 3
  • Metropolitan Line services from Chesham, Amersham and Watford, plus Chiltern services from Aylesbury via Amersham, to be in new tunnel beneath Marylebone thence on to:
    • Baker Street*
    • Goodge Street*
    • Russell Square*
    • Chancery Lane*
    • Monument*
    • Fenchurch Street*
    • then takes over c2c network allowing redevelopment of Fenchurch Street surface sttaion.

Metropolitan Line
With "Metroland" services gone stripped back Metropolitan Line to consist of:
  • Uxbridge - Baker Street - Barking
  • Hammersmith - Baker Street - Barking

Circle Line
No longer serves Hammersmith-Paddington (all now part of Metropolitan Line) but now runs:
  • Wimbledon - Earl's Court - Edgware Road - Aldgate - Gloucester Road - Edgware Road

DLR
Extended East from Bank to Charing Cross, plus closing Tower Gateway, picking up some of the original 'Fleet' Line proposals serving:
  • Tower Hill (new underground station on bank branch)*
  • Bank [Existing station]
  • City Thameslink*
  • Aldwych* [See above 'Strand' Line]
  • Charing Cross*

How about a couple new Circle Lines for London?

Outer Circle Line - this would run around the suburbs of London, completely underground as there are not many places where it runs through open land. It enables lots of connections not currently possible and would also relieve some bus services.

Stations with a * connect to existing Tube, DLR, Tram or National Rail services.

Thamesmead
Abbey Wood*
Bexleyheath*
Bexleyheath Central (entrance next to Broadway shopping centre)
Sidcup*
Sidcup Central (entrance where A211 and A222 meet)
Chislehurst Central (entrance where A208 and A222 meet)
Chislehurst*
Bickley*
Bromley South*
West Wickham*
Addiscombe*
East Croydon*
Waddon*
Wallington*
Carshalton Beeches*
Sutton*
Cheam*
North Cheam (entrance where the abandoned building is where the A24 and A2043 meet)
Worcester Park*
Old Malden (entrance where the Chessington branch crosses the A2043)
New Malden*
Norbiton*
Kingston*
Hampton Wick*
Teddington*
Strawberry Hill*
Twickenham*
Twickenham Stadium (entrance on the south side of the stadium by Whitton Rd)
Hounslow*
Hounslow Central*
Heston (entrance where the A3005 and A3063 meet)
Norwood Green (entrance where the A3005 crosses the canal)
Southall*
Greenford Broadway (entrance on, well, Greenford Broadway)
Greenford*
Sudbury Hill*
Harrow on the Hill*
Harrow and Wealdstone*
Belmont (entrance where the old station was)
Stanmore*
Edgware*
Mill Hill Broadway*
High Barnet*
New Barnet*
Cockfosters*
Oakwood*
Enfield Chase*
Enfield Town*
Southbury*
Ponders End*
Chingford Fountain (entrance where A110 and A112 meet)
Chingford*
Woodford*
Clayhall (entrance on Woodford Avenue)
Gants Hill*
Ilford*
Barking*
Barking Riverside (entrance where planned Overground station was)

Inner Circle Line - this would connect all of the London Terminals (exc. Charing Cross/Cannon St) on a superfast loop around the centre of London.

Stations with a * connect to existing Tube, DLR, Tram or National Rail services

Victoria*
Westminster*
Waterloo*
Blackfriars* (station south of the river)
London Bridge*
Fenchurch St*
Liverpool St*
Moorgate*
Kings Cross St Pancras*
Euston*
Baker Street*
Marylebone*
Paddington*
Hyde Park (presumably a deep level tube line could tunnel under it and a station with nothing above ground other than a set of stairs and a lift down would work?)

I read the "Central London Study 1989", which features proposals to boost the tube network for the 21st century, which included the Jubilee and Bakerloo line extensions. There was another scheme (titled "West London Scheme") that involved extending the Central and Bakerloo lines.

Screenshot_20200412_162043.jpg

This is my version of the plan:

Central line
- Shepherd's Bush
- Goldhawk Road
- Paddenswick Road
- Turnham Green
(tunnel ends just west of District line's tracks)
- Chiswick Park (new platforms)
- Gunnersbury
- Kew Gardens
- Richmond
This resembles the Central London Railway's (failed) 1915 proposal, following the same route.

To avoid complications of three branches, the West London Study also suggested the Bakerloo line should also be extended.

Bakerloo line
- Queen's Park
(tunnel starts west of Queen's Park, currently at an industrial site)
- Kensal Green
- Hythe Road (also proposed as a London Overground station, possible connection)
- Old Oak Common
(tunnel ends just west of North London line, and on the Acton-Northolt line, then links with the Central line)
- North Acton
- West Acton
- Ealing Broadway
Central line would no longer operate Ealing Broadway branch.

Alternative for Bakerloo
Same as above until Old Oak Common
(tunnel ends just west of North London line, and on the Acton-Northolt line)
- North Acton (new platforms built on the Acton-Northolt line
(links with the Central line tracks between North Acton and Hanger Lane)
- Hanger Lane
- Perivale
- Greenford
- Northolt
- South Ruislip
- Ruislip Gardens
- West Ruislip
Central line would operate the West Ruislip branch as a limited service (for when there are movements to/from Ruislip depot) or as a reduced service.

Changes to the TfL network:

======

Bakerloo Line:

The new Bakerloo will consist of 3 new eastern branches:

Core section:
Elephant & Castle (LU, NR)
Burgess Park
Peckham North
New Cross Gate (LO, NR)
Lewisham (DLR, NR)

The line splits at Lewisham creating the current proposals of Hayes branch and Beckenham branch including:

Ladywell
Catford Bridge (NR (OSI with Catford))
Lower Sydenham
New Beckenham

Line splits again creating two new branches serving:

Hayes branch:
Clock House
Elmers End (Trams)
Eden Park
West Wickham
Hayes

Beckenham branch:

Beckenham Junction (Trams, NR)
Bromley Central (NR (OSI with Bromley North or Bromley South))

The new north-east branch from Lewisham will include:

Blackheath (NR)
Charlton Park
Woolwich Arsenal (DLR, NR)
North Woolwich
Gallions Reach (DLR)
Barking (LU, LO, NR)
Ilford (XR)
Gants Hill (LU)

======

Circle Line:

No more services to Hammersmith

===========

Metropolitan Line:

Replaces the H&C’s eastern end, running off-peak services from:

Uxbridge to Barking
Watford to Barking
Ocassional service terminating at Aldgate like District with Kensington Olympia.

Watford Junction extension approved running services to and from Aldgate. Watford (Met) remains open.

=============

Hammersmith and City Line:

With the Met taking over Aldgate East onwards, the line now runs a new southern route serving:

Aldgate (LU)
Bermondsey (LU)
Surrey Quays (LO)
New Cross (LO, NR) (Taking over from overground)

Separate branch from Surrey Quays:

Deptford (NR)
Greenwich (NR, DLR)
Maze Hill
Westcombe Park
Charlton
Woolwich Dockyard
Woolwich Arsenal (DLR, NR)
Plumstead
Abbey Wood (NR, XR)

===========

London Overground:

Unpopular opinion, but if West Ealing - Greenford wont have direct services to Paddington, it could become part of London Overground, and possibly even up to West Ruislip.

In between Barking and Barking Riverside, a new Station is created called “Rippleside”.

=====

Crossrail 3:

Like what Helvellyn suggested, running from Aylesbury through to Essex.

The core section would be:

Wembley Park (LU)
Kilburn High Road (LO)
Marylebone (NR, LU)
Tottenham Court Road (LU, XR1&2)
Aldwych
City Thameslink (NR)
Bank/Monument (LU, DLR)
Fenchurch Street (NR

The eastern section would contain the current ‘Metro’ c2c stations including the 3 branches east with the Rainham branch, Ockendon branch and Basildon branch.

The stations at Purfleet, Ockendon, Lakeside and Grays are moved to zone 9, while West Horndon, Laindon and Basildon are moved to zone C with no Oyster available (like Iver - Reading)

I'm going to have a go at this!:

==========

London Underground Cannon-Hyde Line (Could be a possible Crossrail 3, but we'll stick with LU) (I'm kinda stealing some ideas here but this is my view)

Running from Limehouse to Willesden Junction Via Cannon Street and Paddington, also known as the core section on the line.

Stations (X means that express services stop at the station): Limehouse (X)(Runs on the same line between here and between TFS) - Shadwell - Tower & Fenchurch Street (X) - Langbourn Cornhill - Cannon Street (Connections to Bank) - Cordwainer Mansion House - St. Pauls & Baynard - City Thameslink (X) - Chancery South - Holborn East - Tottenham South - Soho Central (X) - Carnaby - Burlington - St. James's East - St James's Park - Westminister (X) - Victoria (X) - Belgravia - Knightsbridge - Kensington Hyde Park - Lancaster Gate - Paddington (X) - Royal Oak - Maida Hill - Kensal Town - College Park (Old Oak Common) - Willesden Junction (X)

Most stations have themes to represent the area they serve.

All stations are universally accessible and step-free. (only for the core section)

Improvements and achievements:
  • Extra capacity, as always with new lines.
  • Redevelopment of Wilsden Junction station and surrounding area. This includes Southern services making extra stops at this station.
  • More services from Cannon Street (we will get onto the reason in a bit)
  • Fastest London Underground Line (75 mph maximum on core section)
  • Improves services on WCML, and C2C, as well as around Tower Hill and Soho.
  • First full loading gauge tube line, due to the higher tunnels and through services.
  • Watford DC line might be re-electrified to OHL. The section between Willesden junction would also be classified as a WCML line and the Watford DC line might become a nickname for LO Services. (That means that the line might be renamed to the Watford AC line!)
Rolling Stock:
They would order Hitachi AT100's. You remember those from the 2014 launch day, don't you? (I'm getting flashback's to 2018...) This might be a very unpopular decision, but in my opinion, these trains have not got the attention they deserved. They would be classified as "Class 775" and would run on all services.

Features:
  • Maximum speed: 75 mph (London Underground only), 100 mph (Other lines)
  • Multi-Mode trains. Operates on 750 V DC third rail / 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead lines / Lithium-Ion Battery. (For depot moving or Last-Mile operations only)
  • Front saloon windows for Passengers to look forward from the main passenger area at each end of the train.
  • 50% of the seats are longitudinal and the other 50% is transverse. (12.5% of the transverse seats being Airline and 37.5% being face-to-face seating.)
  • 7 cars per set.
  • Free Wi-fi
  • Seatback tables
  • Face-to-face seats have small tables
  • USB ports
  • Universal Access toilets
  • 3 doors per car side.
  • LCD Passenger Information Screens.
  • HVAC
  • Rapid Acceleration. Comparable to a Class 331.
  • Priority Seats in each car.
  • Designated "Free-space car" with perch seats, space for wheelchairs, large luggage bays and larger windows.
  • Large cab

Through Services:
The Cannon-Hyde line would be known for it's many though services, most of them running as express services on the core section. They're run by different companies on each section, those being: London Northwestern Railway (North of Willesden Junction), Great Western Railway (West of Royal Oak), Southeastern (South of Cannon Street) and C2C (East of Limehouse), with London Underground running the core section, they will also have link's to connect these lines where through services transfer to another operator. When through services go to at Watford Junction, they stop at all Watford AC line Stations. This would mean that the Bakerloo Line might terminate at Queen's park or Willesden Junction instead of Harrow and Wealdstone, however, the Watford AC line might still retain its service. Express services also nake fewer stops outside of the core section, but I haven't decided what stations they stop at yet.
The reason why the section between Willesden and Limehouse is called the core section is that it would be so hard to determine which station which served Cannon-Hyde through services would actually be the Cannon-Hyde line itself, due to the many though services, thus stations which are not in the core section, but served by the line's through services are not officially a part of the Cannon-Hyde line, but served by them.

The through services are (Note: "tphfet" stands for "trains per hour for each terminus") :
  • Watford Junction/Slough to Faversham via Lewisham and Woolwich Arsenal (All-stops) (1tphfet)
  • Milton Keynes Central/Reading to Ashford International via Sevenoaks and Paddock wood (Express) (1tphfet) (Sometimes extends to Dover Priory on Peak times, Weekends and Holidays.)
  • Watford Junction/Slough to Hayes (Kent) (1tphfet) (All-stops)
  • Milton Keynes Central/Reading to Maidstone East via Swanley (Express) (1tphfet)
  • Heathrow Terminal 4/Heathrow Terminal 5 to Faversham/Southend Central via Laidon on C2C (1tphfet)
  • Milton Keynes Central/Reading to Southend Central via Laidon (1tphfet)
  • Watford Junction/Slough to Grays Via Purfleet (1tphfet)
  • Northampton/Dicot Parkway to Victoria (Express) (0.5tphfet) (Irregular service, could have more trains per hour in peak times)
There are 12 non-through service trains per hour so in total that is 30 trains per hour in total on the core section.

It might be a bit too political to get clearance to these through services though!

==========

London Overground Euston Line

The Euston line is a LO direct shuttle that would connect London Euston with Willesden Junction and Wembley Stadium (On matchdays only) with no other intermediate stops.

It would be made for easy access for passengers who want to travel from south of the Cannon-Hyde Line to Euston to access Avanti West Coast services which could not stop at Watford Junction or Milton Keynes Central, as well as providing easy access to Wembley stadium.

It mostly has the same characteristics as the Cannon-Hyde Line but has no through services.

=================

I guess that's it! This took me quite a long time to write!

Euston DLR extension:

Bank (LU, DLR)
City Thameslink (NR)
Holborn (LU)
Euston (LU, LO, NR, HS2)

(Yes I know the Euston extension is in the planning, this is just my idea for it)

I believe that is the same as the proposed plan, albeit it might extend to St Pancras.

Oops...

What's the point of that when you can just change at Holborn?

I see.

I believe it is to provide a better link between Euston and St Pancras, and also to connect Canary Wharf and the Docklands direct to KXSTP as a direct train taking a couple minutes more would likely be more preferable than changing at Holborn (or City Thameslink).

Take the Met southbound underground at Neasden, rebuild the Jubilee from there to its current portal as using the northern two lines, giving the middle two to Chiltern, including a stop at West Hampstead. The Chiltern lines go through the rebuilt through lines at Finchley Rd and join the Marylebone approach south of Lords. Then they can briefly shut down the current NR tunnels to electrify.

I think the Metropolitan Line west of Baker Street should be incorporated into a third Crossrail line running NW - SE. The existing tracks can be diverted into a new bored tunnel south of Finchley Road, serving the following stations:

Baker Street/Marylebone
Bond Street
Victoria
Waterloo
Fenchurch Street

After that, the line will emerge and join up with the LTS mainline. Services on this “New Metropolitan” line will run to Tilbury replacing the c2c suburban services via Dagenham and Ockendon

This proposal would eliminate today’s Metropolitan route east of Baker Street, leaving just the H&C and Circle through its original section. Thinking about it, i’m not sure whether the Metropolitan name should go to the new NW-SE crossrail line, or whether the H&C should be renamed to it like it was before 1990.
