A small selection of higher quality images are now on my flickr page...

Must say my first impressions of these are very positive, some of the smoothest buses i have ever been on.

Not sure if I’m liking the branded Streetdeck. I don’t think the turquoise colour suits them with the dark green at the rear.

38210 is now back from repaint, Streetlite 63201 is also due back from repaint today with a 3rd E500 38201 going south in it's place.

Streetdeck-FCEV 39712 also now carries full route branding for the 19, looks pretty smart.

The full branding on the Streetdecks looks better now that it’s finished.

I must say the Citaro’s look really poorly inside. The seats are really worn and I’m disappointed they weren’t refurbished before entering service. You can tell they’ve been worked hard in York. What are First thinking.

History repeating itself slightly when Glasgow got the ex London ALX400s and Presidents.

However there is no money spare at this moment of time to pay for such luxury's maybe in the second half of 2021?

I do like the repaints, there do look grand.

They were due to be getting done, but Covid meant the budget being cut. Budget allowing the plans are the Citaros and E500s will be getting internal refurbs next year.

***New Post***

10160/61/66/70/72 are now withdrawn. 10163/65/71 will be withdrawn next month once 11112/13/14 arrive.

It's been reported elsewhere that 10 B9TLs (all bar the two repainted examples 37635/36) and 4 B7RLEs will be leaving the fleet once the Streetdecks enter service.

Not sure if I’m liking the red branding on the E500s. Perhaps once it’s fully completed it’ll look better but it doesn’t seem as dark on the E500s as it does on the Mercs or any of Glasgow’s red branded buses.

The Streetdecks are looking great in their full branding. They seem to be just about ready to enter service.

It's the exact same shade of red so i'm not sure why it seems that way, perhaps it's just how it's picked up in photos?

Looks like 38220 has went for repaint now, which will be the 5th E500 repainted.

There was unconfirmed speculation that they will enter service on the 28th, the only reason they haven't been in service yet is because they were wanting all 15 of them here first.

The world's first fleet of double decker hydrogen buses is being officially launched into service tomorrow in Aberdeen.
Run by First Bus - Scotland’s largest bus operator – in a project led by Aberdeen City Council, the hydrogen buses represent a major step forward in reducing climate change, as cities across the world witness how far innovation in the transport industry has come.
The zero-emission fleet emits nothing more than water from its exhausts as the fuel is made from just wind and water. Furthermore, plans are in place for Aberdeen to make its own hydrogen to power the buses, making it an even greener energy source for the local community.
The start of the first of the zero emission buses on their service routes tomorrow also underlines the city’s role as the energy capital of Europe and shows its commitment to the transition of green energy from oil and gas as part of the city’s Net Zero Vision.
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “We are delighted to be launching the world’s first hydrogen double decker bus fleet onto the streets of Aberdeen.”
“Aberdeen is one of Europe’s pioneering hydrogen cities and through the work of Aberdeen City Council, the city has developed a cluster of hydrogen activity and the new double decker buses are a great addition to one of the largest and most varied fleets of hydrogen vehicles in Europe. They have even more advanced technology which pushes established hydrogen boundaries and will greatly assist us in tackling air pollution in the city.”
Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “It is fantastic to see the world’s first hydrogen-powered double decker buses being driven about and used by residents of Aberdeen.
“The buses show our commitment to achieving net zero and support the global energy transition as a climate positive city while cementing our position as a world leader in the energy sector as an economic driver for the city, region, Scotland and the UK.”
The new 60-seat double-deckers are set to transform the air of the granite city as they save one kilogram of CO2 with each kilometre they drive. The buses will also tackle more than just air pollution, as they are virtually silent when they run, helping to create quieter, calmer streets.
While prototype hydrogen buses have been designed and used previously, as the transport industry explores how it can make use of universe’s most abundant element, these double deckers are the first of their kind to go into operation and welcome customers on board.
Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director at First Bus, said: "Today marks a significant milestone in our industry and the way that people choose to travel. Scotland will be home to COP26 later this year and it is fantastic to know that we'll be setting a stellar example of just what can be achieved with new technology as we welcome leaders from around the world.
“First Bus serves thousands of customers in Aberdeen and we know that so many of our customers take the bus because they care about our planet and reducing their carbon footprint. We're excited to now be able to offer them an even greener and quieter way of getting about the city.”
Hydrogen will play a significant part in the future of the bus industry, as they offer an extremely efficient fuel solution, with great range. The cutting-edge buses also take less than 10 minutes to fully refuel.
The vehicles will be operated mainly on the Service 19 (Peterculter to Tillydrone) along with other services and is part funded by the European Union’s JIVE project, which aims to aid commercialisation of hydrogen buses through joint procurement between cities. Cities that will follow Aberdeen’s footsteps include London and Birmingham, with Dundee and Brighton and Hove being lead partners in JIVE2.
The new £8.3million project has been funded by Aberdeen City Council, the Scottish Government, and the European Union (FCH JU), with an investment of about £500,000 per vehicle.
The UK’s first hydrogen production and bus refuelling station was opened in Aberdeen in 2015 as part of a £19million green transport demonstration project. The Aberdeen City Council-led project tested the economic and environmental benefits of hydrogen transport technologies and aims to drive the development of hydrogen technologies.
To support the launch, First Bus has unveiled the hotly anticipated new buses in a quirky ‘Stars in their Eyes’ themed video on social media, designed to get Scotland’s hydrogen-eration all steamed up for the arrival of the new fleet.

* This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 735582. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe Industry and Hydrogen Europe Research.
About the FCH JU: The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realising their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-lean energy system. The three members of the FCH JU are the European Commission, fuel cell and hydrogen industries represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by the research grouping Hydrogen Europe Research.
About JIVE: The JIVE (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe) project seeks to deploy 139 new zero-emission fuel cell buses and associated refuelling infrastructure across five countries. JIVE has received funding from the FCH JU (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) under grant agreement No 735582. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe Industry and Hydrogen Europe Research. This is the first out of two projects: The JIVE2 project started in January 2018. Combined, the JIVE projects will deploy nearly 300 fuel cell buses in 22 cities across Europe by the early 2020s. This is the most ambitious pan-European initiative to-date in commercialising hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

15 Streetdecks at £500,000 each?

Wow!
A further 10 are due later this year for the 23 too.

On a separate note 39706/8/9/12/13 are now in service on the 19. 37633/35/39/41/43 were put on the other five duties, however both 37639 and 37641 broke down so were replaced by 37634 and 37642. Thus far there hasn't been any issues with the Streetdeck-FCEVs and they're all running to time.

A full list for those interested is as follows.
39701 SV70BWK
39702 SV70BWL
39703 SV70BWM
39704 SV70BWN
39705 SV70BWO
39706 SV70BWP
39707 SV70BWU
39708 SV70BWW
39709 SV70BWX
39710 SV70BWY
39711 SV70BWZ
39712 SV70BXA
39713 SV70BXB
39714 SV70BXC
39715 SV70BXE

39701/02/03/10/11 are unbranded, while 39704-9/12-15 have Turquoise fronts and branding for the 19. All 15 have internal branding for the Hydrogen Project.

First just pay the cost of a normal diesel double decker, the rest comes from Aberdeen Council, Scottish Government and EU funding.

I may have missed it but have First Aberdeen had any funding for Euro 6 upgrades to existing vehicles?

They certainly look the part. It will be interesting having 25 of them on the streets of Aberdeen by the end of the year. So far of the examples in service they're proving pretty reliable.

No funding yet as far as i know. The Aberdeen LEZ zone has been delayed again due to Covid and the council are yet to set a final date. I can't see any conversions being done until a final date is set as it seems likely that types such as the Enviro500s, B7RLEs and Citaros will be up for withdrawal or already withdrawn by then.

They do look smashing, ang nice to see investments during a difficult time. Are there still planned to all be used on the 19s?

The plan is for the 10 branded examples to be used on the 19 and the 5 unbranded examples on the 23, however they may also appear on the 3.

Not yet, but, pre Covid, they would not have met the Aberdeen Council requirements for the number of Euro6 emission buses by the end of 2020, so I am not sure what was planned.

They do indeed look smashing.

I'm a little surprised that First have put them in standard livery (with the route branding) rather than a more bespoke livery extolling their special credentials. That said, First West of England were similarly low key with their gas bus fleet but perhaps they take the view that route branding is more important (and they are probably right to think that).

It’ll be interesting to see yellow branded Streetdecks for the 23.

They seem to be speeding up with the repaints. Hopefully once they get enough buses in the new livery they’ll start branding other routes.

I think part of the issue for the moment is that vehicles may not be staying on the routes they currently operate.

They can't brand the 12 or 23 as it's likely that the Streetdecks will displace the Streetlites on to the 12. I doubt we'll see any E200MMCs repainted either as if the current speculation is anything to go by they may be leaving the fleet soon as there's been persistent issues with them on the 13 grounding out and getting damaged by kerbs and speedbumps. In fact if you look about on Flickr you'll be hard pressed to find a photo of one without any bumps/scratches, and in person close up the state of the bodywork on them is very poor. Despite there only being 7 in the fleet one is pretty much always off the road - currently 67090. It's a shame as they're quite nice buses from a passenger perspective, especially with the non-standard interiors which are far nicer than the standard lilac.

That aside it would be nice to see some E300s with blue fronts for the 17 & 18 or Streetlites with purple fronts for the 3.

Focus is mostly on the E500s at the moment with 38201/03/10/20/24 repainted since December and 38219 currently being done. Both 38220 and 38224 have route branding for the 1/2. (Not my photo)

The one thing that's always peed me off a bit with First Aberdeen is branding buses for a particular route then not sticking with those routes.

Even before Covid there were many examples of branded buses running on different route numbers.

Maybe it's a virgo pedantic thing and I know there are breakdowns etc. but it seems they got to a point where the branding was ignored. Why spend all that money and time on the special livery for the buses to be allocated anywhere?

Glasgow have never been great at keeping branded buses to their route. This is probably the most buses which have been branded since the Overground days and it’s much more noticeable with the fully branded fronts.

During the Overground days I found Aberdeen to always be better at keeping buses to their allocated routes. I do like the idea of branding but sometimes this is where it would be easier to keep buses uniform in 1 livery.

That being said I do hope to see some E300s and Streetlites branded. Already with the 1/2 buses being branded and the 19 it’s good to see progress as up to now they’ve had nothing.

I wonder if Aberdeen will see any new singles if the E200MMCs do go or whether these new Streetdecks will be the first of many.

One rumour is Wright are making a heavyweight integral single deck vehicle, with a hydrogen version available. Although with 25 StreetDecks ordered I'm not sure if Aberdeen will be getting any other new buses
