I recently became employed by first great western, today I receiver my first staff travel pass. I tried to ring up to ask this question but there office is shut.
Is this only for use on railway or can I use the pass on first busses Aswell?

Would be very useful to know this as I am an apprentice and is currently quite challenging to try and get to college or the depot everyday, I would use the bus but would be quite expensive five days a week.

Thanks in advance!

I think you can use it on First buses to commute to work only, you must be in uniform as well.

There is a reciprocal arrangement with First Devon and Cornwall only (including the Buses of Somerset) and is for travel to and from work only although you do not have to be in uniform.

Officially I believe it it only for leisure/duty/residential travel with FGW however if you are referring to the pass with the 16 First boxes on it then you can use them on any First operated train service as First Rail Staff get a limited number of First Buses Weekly tickets from the My Rewards website.

I also think it depends on the local agreements between your employer and the local buses, for example I have been told by one local bus driver if I am in uniform and going to or from work I just need to show my staff pass and I travel for free even though it's a Non First Bus company although I've never heard of this from anywhere else.

Now Unofficially, this does vary from area to area but I was staying in a area before which is served by First Buses and still is and upon boarding I asked if my First Rail Pass which ID me as a First employee was acceptable for free travel on the bus to which I was told to jump on and nothing more was said - that said IF the driver said no I had the money anyway to pay my way it's just I was told unofficially by a colleague of the agreement.

Sadly I be losing these benefits in a very short while but hey ho, I hope this has been helpful to you?
