Hmm that's not the same as the purchasing team at UWE say! ;) And the Centro was 30004, BX07AXO, it was on the 13.

It's also interesting to note that he's not to bothered about the loss of the bulk of their tendered work in South Glos!

Thanks Swifty, the fleetlists I've seen couldn't have been updated from when it was first up in the Midlands and promptly returned last year then by the looks of it.

I take it you've seen Simon's response on the forum below then, he's not going to say it's going to hurt Wessex/alternatively they could have bid low to win them initially and they no longer make a profit?

Link for anyone else interested:

As for the UWE, it may be that that both you and Winston are right. It may well be an 8 year deal but with a break clause? In these instances AND I DON'T KNOW THE FACTS IN THIS CASE but usually this allows a retender and if a change of supplier occurs, then a payment might be payable to the unlucky incumbent.

Of course, the First strategy might be to undermine the Wessex business so that they exit some or all of their Bristol/Bath activities.

TheGrandWazoo,

I'm only going on based on response, forum link above for info.

It's pretty obvious that First are looking to push Wessex out of certain parts/all of Bristol. If First were to ever to win the UWE contract that would be the death blow to Wessex, I think it would be fairly safe to assume the remaining work wouldn't be sufficient for Rotala to warrant retaining a presence in Bristol

Glasgow 2014 drives forward with First Bus contract for Commonwealth Games travel

Thursday 1 May 2014

Glasgow 2014 today (Thursday, May 1) revealed that First Bus has become the latest addition to the Games Sponsor Family.

First, part of the Aberdeen-based FirstGroup, is the largest bus operator in Scotland and becomes the Official Supporter - Bus Services for the Games having been planning for Glasgow 2014 for more than two years.

The bus operator’s network of high frequency, regular services across the city will be supplemented by designated spectator shuttle services linking principal Games venues within the city centre. First will publish details of its comprehensive Games transport arrangements in the coming weeks.

First will provide bus services for all client groups during the Games including athletes, technical officials and the media.

First currently operates around 950 vehicles across Greater Glasgow. The company will operate additional buses during the Games in order to transport the large numbers of spectators expected, as well as all the accredited client groups.

The company will also become an Official Supporter of Team Scotland.

Today’s announcement follows train operator ScotRail, also part of FirstGroup, becoming Official Supporter - Passenger Services for the Games.

Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, David Grevemberg, said:
“We warmly welcome First to Glasgow 2014’s Sponsor Family. This summer’s Commonwealth Games will see around 6,500 athletes and officials come to Glasgow for 11 days of competition that will put Glasgow and Scotland on the world stage. First’s services will be crucial in helping them move around the city.
“First will also provide additional bus services to help the thousands of extra people expected at Games time, including spectators, visitors and local people enjoying the fantastic action at our venues or those looking to soak up the atmosphere around Glasgow and beyond.”

Tim O’Toole, Chief Executive of FirstGroup, which operates First Bus, said:
“We are proud of our Scottish heritage and the important role we play connecting people and communities up and down Scotland, every day.
“The Commonwealth Games, falling in the Year of Homecoming, provides an important opportunity for Scotland to promote itself around the world, and we look forward to playing our part, moving people around Glasgow and Scotland as quickly and efficiently as we can.”

Giles Fearnley, Managing Director of First Bus, said:
"Glasgow 2014 promises to be one of the most important and spectacular sporting events ever hosted in the UK.
"First Bus is proud of the services that we provide to customers across our Scottish operations and to play an integral role in the success of the Games. Our preparations are nearing completion and are very much looking forward to the start of Glasgow 2014."

Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow City Council, said:
“I am pleased to see yet another sponsor for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Bus services are an important part of the delivery of a successful event of this magnitude, and First clearly has tremendous expertise and experience in providing transport in Glasgow and beyond.”

Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland , said:
"For all athletes competing at Glasgow 2014, a first-class transport system during the Games is high on their list of priorities. It is essential for them to have confidence in the arrangements knowing that they will get to their competition and training venues on time. It is great news that First has come on board and that the transport arrangements are in such experienced hands."

Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said:
“It’s great to have First Bus on board as a sponsor of the XX Commonwealth Games. I would encourage people who are coming to watch the Games to take advantage of public transport in Glasgow as much as possible, as it will be the quickest, easiest and most efficient way to get around.

“Transport within the city boundaries is included in the price of Games tickets so it won’t even cost spectators anything extra to travel across Glasgow.

“It’s so inspiring and encouraging that so many big organisations across the country are rallying up and getting behind the Games – which are gearing up to be the best ever – and Team Scotland.”

Well they better get their finger out and get they old Tridents and President's off the road, and anything else that's past it...

I'm surprised at the fact that travel is only permitted within City boundaries rather than Network boundaries. Thankfully we will get free travel with our accreditation passes.

Would First need to apply for a new O-Licence for the Games, or will they just run of No.1 and No.2?

It looks like Blantyre have got their new Streetlites. Just saw 63225 (SN14DYC) on a 267 heading out to Hamilton...
And I saw 63224 (SN14 DYB) near the new bus depot being built at Gushetfaulds heading back into the city centre. Picture attached:

I had a good look at one of Blantyre's new Streetlite's the afternoon thanks to a mate of mine, one thing I noticed was that the drivers cab is absolutely bare, and god knows how the drivers are meant to read the speedo as it's absolutely tiny.

Are all Streetlite's done like that?

If it's like the demonstrator I drove, I really liked the simplicity of it.

I didn't find the speedo difficult to read, though the digital rev counter in the corner of the screen on the dashboard was a little odd.
I liked the layout of the bit to the right with all the buttons as well,

Some Massive service changes in Clacton and Colchester in Essex

http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/essex/travel_news/service_updates/?item=11531&conf=0

They are actually re routing the 103/104 down colchester high street, loads of services being re introduced for the summer in clacton.

Very interesting that there will be a new positioning service between Harwich and Colchester called the 106, it will operate early morning and evening. Since they closed the bus depot in Harwich their has been a hell of alot of dead busses so this will cut down on them.

Will be interesting to see the timetables, frequency looks to have increase in many places.

That has to be the biggest change for quite a few years.

When they warrant getting new buses by making a few quid for a change...

It will cost a lot more to convert those double door tridents and T to V reg flolines to meet the DDA than to replace them with same number of 7 to 10 year old ones cascaded in that do meet the DDA requirements.

"This is not a door" on the centre door looks unprofessional. And any mid life cascade buses must be far more comfortable to travel on than the hard seated older low floors.

Rarely any cost justification to adapt buses to meet all the DDA regulations (some exceptions, such as First Group's ALX400s) - don't forget that they must be already 15 year old anyway.

First Group new Chairman has signalled they are now open to splitting up the company after a dissapointing year with UK Bus and Student Bus divisions dragging down the group as a whole. A year on from the share issue they are still worried about the size of the companies debt pile and admit it will take several years to get revenues back where they should be and enable them to pay a dividend.

The new Chairman has fired half the board of directors.

Do you have a link to this? I take it UK bus and Greyhound could be spilt?

At least First Scotland East has already been spilt, despite the fact neither operation, makes money. ;)

In other news:

First Potteries, to get new buses and network review:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/30109352@N00/14196661956/

Up north, Glasgow is back in profit, Aberdeen has more passengers, BUT
But he said its East of Scotland bus operation "is the most challenged at the moment".

http://www.heraldscotland.com/busin...w-profitability-drives-firstgroup-on.24285436

Its pretty clear, First Scotland East has not returned to profit, which is ashame. ( if it did, First would have made this clear as in the case of Glasgow)

And will the 38 be split with the Falkirk to Stirling section becoming the 60A e.g. or an extension to the 62/63 if First lose the Scotrail contract?

2 hours 40 from Stirling to Edinburgh on the same bus is quite a trek.

Streetlites are now appearing on my local route, the 2 (Faifley - Baillieston/Airdrie). I caught 47627 (SN14 DZK) at around 17:40 today at Singer Station:

Try travelling on the X95 then as it takes just over three-and-a-half hours to get from Edinburgh to Carlisle. :)
