I just noticed this headline in the News: Barbie to buy tank engine Thomas

crikey, i thought, so they may have given up on the new Great Western franchise but they're expanding into the Isle of Sodor? Then I looked at it, and saw that it was about a toy manucturer.

Well if they did, they could probably give it to TPE as an extension of their Barrow services ... I'm sure the island could do with a direct link to Manchester Airport.

(For those who don't know, Sodor where the Railway Series is set is notionally an island stretching from Furness to the Isle of Man, and its railways link to the mainland network at Barrow.)

Hopefully this will end the days of HIT entertainment blackmailing preserved railways running 'Thomas' events.

Does anyone know if First will be ordering new rolling stock for their new FIS franchise? I hope so as I'm fed up using these elderly trains that run the services currently. Manpower intensive, dirty, unreliable and bad for the environment (I mean they come nowhere near meeting modern emissions standards!).

Hearing of this dramatic news, I was tempted to play a video which confirmed my worst fears about the existing colour schemes already there.

There was even a song to stress their individualities.......
There's Green and Red and Brown and Blue

Will Sir Topham Hatt be remaining on the management team, or will they be bringing in some thrusting new managing director with New Ideas? or perhaps Sir Topham could take over TPE, considering his record as one of the longest serving railway managers in history.

Hold on a second, this looks like the RailUk Forums, smells like the RailUk Forums, Not sure if it is yet or not though:

I think the next line should be:

    Shunting trucks that smell of............

The song wasn't in the original books and as such is non-canon IMO. :P

Some rather questionable high-speed propelling moves there, such as at 0:15 & 0:20. I hope the new management will take a look at some of these questionable working practices.

As well as the total lack of fleet homogenization?

My 5 year old son is a Thomas fan - that dratted song drives me nuts!

( By the way, they've got an A4 and a 9F on the island as well; funny - I don't remember those in the books... )

Unfortunately, once the Rev Awdry's family lost the copyright, commercialism took over. Look what happened to the Mr Men books...there were never any Little Miss books in the original book series.

    I second this!

I also find it shocking how the RAIB have consistently overlooked the glaring lack of safe working practice on the Isle of Sodor.

And I can't see any ROSCO buying up Gordon.. He's just too up himself to pull anything other than an express train, and hence would be of no use to any other TOC.

I trust too, that the DfT will be taking a careful look at the practice of hiding in tunnels if it rains.

I never understand how sir toppam hatt managed to run a useful railway when, when his engines refused to do what they were told he locked them in the shed. Maybe the new management will adress this. Also i hope that maintainance will improve so that gordan doesnt lose his dome again. Oh and while im here can we have ringo starr back as voice over i cant stand the current bloke.

I think if First were running the Isle of Sodor 'Express' franchise, there would be several strikes related to the fat controller's salary of £477,000.

Oh, drat, I mentioned it again. Sorry Vern ;)

Sir Toppham pensioned off and replaced by a non-executive director formerly of EDF Energy.

Plans for motive power rationalisation drawn up, initially retaining the fleet on current work.

Freight work lost hand over fist to road, Royal Mail contract lost. Percy mothballed.

Services cut back to 2 hourly, as befits an island branch line. Edward and James put into store.

RAIB condemns troublesome trucks citing "Not fit for purpose; seem to have life of own". Sent to EMR Kingsbury for scrapping.

Director deems loco hauled services not economical on a branch line. Remaining engines put into store, replaced by cascaded 142's.

Remaining engines sold for scrap or preservation. Thomas kept on, seeing the last of his days on ballast and spoil work, limited to 40mph. Last working was scrap and spoil train following the singling of the entire Sodor network. Tidmouth Shed sold for redevelopment. Thomas sold to preservation society for spares.

Class 142 Pacers shipped across to the Isle of Man....now that is an idea worth considering...how many would First Isle of Sodor be interested in?

Great excitement has been heard at Newton Heath on the hearing of this..:D:D
