Good show but no cigar.

That will be the end for Southgate. Most of you will be happy with that but when your media darling Howe or Potter fails who will you blame?

If it went to VAR in The Prem we would be waiting to nigh on midnight.

Oh well until the next time.
Don't get me wrong, it was level and level is onside. It's only that it's such a stupid margin that annoys me. Bring back the mark one, and occasionslly dubious, human eyeball.

Totally agree, in a stadium the first thing fans do now is look at the ref/linesman/screens as you just know how many go to VAR.
I'm looking forward to the new season because we won't have those VAR checks when goals go in, and the even more frustrating 'possible penalty' checks.

Yeah. Not so sure how it goes from here but GS has (taking the wider view) done an incredible job with the team over the last few years, and I say that having had a good old public moan about him a couple of weeks ago.

I didn’t think it would be that close tonight actually. We seem to have steadily improved throughout the tournament and at times we really rattled Spain during the game.
I think as a neutral probably the best team won, but we gave it a right good go tonight and personally I do feel proud of the boys for their performance against a very very good opposition.

We perhaps should have pushed home the advantage after scoring, but Spain are an outstanding team who’ve managed to push aside everyone they’ve faced (including the hosts), yet we weren’t too far away from doing it.

Who knows , maybe it’ll be third time lucky..?

I for one would be grateful if Southgate left, I mean come on how negative to we have to be to convince you he's the problem? The manager sets the formation and playing style, and Southgate sets us up so deep that we are practically in the stands behind the goal.

Spain were far the better team because they had confidence in their formation, yet we still for one moment exposed their Achilles Heel. So what did we do afterwards? Did we push on, no. We sat back and invited more pressure. Insane. We could have pushed on and maybe gone on to win it. But tonight showed that the players are not comfortable with Southgate's style, and that means it is time to find someone with a bit more fire in their belly.

How did Kane keep getting a start for every game and dropping a woeful performance each time when the likes of Toney, Watkins, and Palmer all warmed the bench?

The manager is clueless. It's time to change him before the team's years are behind them.

Foden, in my opinion, hasn't been the best all tournament either, yet he also managed more than enough starts.

And, of course, because we have only finished second, suddenly Southgate and Kane are the worst manager/player (respectively) in the universe again and should have been gone long ago. England were utterly awful, played the worst football at the tournament, and got lucky with every single match. In the first round they scored a goal, which was lucky, and then in the next match they won on penalties, which was even luckier. Then in the semi-final they scored another goal. Two goals! How lucky can you get!

Meanwhile, back in the real world... Sport is not sport without the luck of the bounce. England were beaten by a better team tonight, but it could so easily have been the other way, but for Stones's knee and a goal-line clearance.

And Kane hasn't been at his best, and really needs a striking partner in my opinion, but is a share of the Golden Boot to be sniffed at?

Did the Greek media complain about negative football in 2004? I don't think they did. It's all very well saying that unattractive football is useless, but, when it's got you to two finals and a semi-final out of four tournaments, when the previous four had had two progressions to the second round, plus one quarter-final, might it not just be effective, perhaps?

The implicit idea that we have a right to win things is absurd - we've got only one top-level orthodox left-back! Which would the people complaining rather: two second-placed finishes playing defensive football, or heavy metal football and two group-stage exits?

This isn't a dig at anyone here, my apologies if it came across that way. But is a silver medal really that much worse than a gold?

I think King Charles's message sums it up perfectly:
Although victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless my wife and I join all my family in urging you and your support team to hold your heads high. All those who have participated in sporting activities at any level will know how utterly despairing such a result can feel when the prize was so near - and will join me in sending heartfelt sympathy, even as we congratulate Spain.

"But please know that your success in reaching the European Championship final is a really great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions today – and in the many triumphs which I have no doubt lie ahead.

Charles R
How I wish his attitude was replicated. I have hopes for 2026 though - sixty years of hurt would fit very nicely with the original song!

And, whether he stays or goes, thank you Gareth. After Euro 2016, did I feel that we would reach the next two finals on the trot? Did I indeed.

Very sensible post. The pile on Southgate gets is ridiculous where the likes of his predecessors (aka Eriksson/Capello) never faced that much abuse. I think he should probably move on now but I thank him for picking us up from the bottom of the pit after Euro 2016 and making me feel genuinely proud of the English players once again.

Yes, we all (me included) need to remember how low we were when he took the job on.

i think it is the end of the road, naturally, for him. He has done a great job, but still not enough for many people who seem to have forgotten how poor England have been over the last 30 years!

I mean come on how negative to we have to be to convince you he's the problem?
I mean come on how much more does he have to do to allow you to show a bit of objectivity? Did you hold Cappello or Erikson to the same standards? What about Hodgson? Keegan? Taylor? Maclaren? Hoddle? Venables lost a Euro semi does he get your ire? Robson lost a world cup semi. Awful?

Just to be clear on Southgate:

2018 World Cup – 4th place
Euro 2020 – Runners up
2022 World Cup – Quarter-final
Euro 2024 – Runners up
63% win rate

He will do for me - who do you want instead?

EDIT - I will add this, because, you know, you have to state the obvious: Southgate is not a fantastic manager. He is a good manager who has done a good if unspectacular job of just chugging away and progressing in tournaments. He has been to slow to make substitutes, to slow to respond to changes in the game and is a cautious manager who doesn't take many risks. He is a good guy, all the players say positive things about him. He has improved the atmosphere around and within the England team and is always willing to take on the criticism to shield the players. He also seems to be a good modern leader with sensible honest values.

The big what if for me is the Italy game at Wembley. That was the one we should have won.

Agreed x 2 - i think it will be the end for Southgate but we should look back at the improvement he has made to our tournament standing and be grateful. I maintain, what will be the excuse when we fail under the next manager?

There is often talk about good saves by the goalkeepers but the 89 minute moment in the match was something else, the 1-1 was crazy but that 2-2 would have been out of this world...although probably just delaying the inevitable for another half hour I suppose!
