Last night the teams in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in the national league were at home to the teams in 17th, 19th, 20th and 21st. All four were home bankers on paper. All four were away wins on grass (or grass sand and mud in the case of the Shay). That’s why the bookie drives a Mercedes

Alfreton 1 v Darlo 1

Alfreton played as they always do: Very direct, MASSIVE units, physical, long throws, bombs into the box from every freekick and corner. Darlo as always failed to stand up to the assault. What was slightly different is that Alfreton ran out of steam and Darlo nicked a point late on.

play off chance over.

PS: We have a couple of young lads on loan from MK Dongs, Bolton and Boro and if last night does not show them what non league, mens football is like AND what getting bombed out of an academy might lead to they don't deserve to be footballers! Alfreton away on a Tuesday night should be all the motivation you need to try harder and make it as an actual footballer!

Pilkington 0 ... Bury 2

An attendance of 886 saw Bury win their 29th league game of the season with goals in the 56th and final minute consolidating their position of league leaders, still three points clear of Lower Breck with a better goal difference

They have four more league matches to play, three of which are at home.

Darlington 2 v Rushall Olympic 2

Darlo stole a point with the last kick of the game. Didn't deserve it, robbed Rushall of a crucial win in thier battle for survival and played badly throughout. Play off hopes over.

Boston (21st) are flying in fairness. We've given ourselves a real chance of staying up.

Bury 3 ... Squires Gate 0

An attendance of 3,894 saw Bury gain their 30th league win of the season, with goals in the 20th/73rd/87th minutes and this was their 6th consecutive "clean sheet" result.

Top spot consolidated and now have gained 100 points in the league this season. Three matches still to play, two of which are at home.

Second placed Lower Breck are away at FC Isle of Man, with an evening kick-off time.

The Liverpool-based side won this one 4-0 tonight to keep within touching distance of top-of-the-table Bury.
How things now stand at the top of the North West Counties Football League...Premier Division:-

Bury.............Goal difference +72.....Points 100
Lower Breck..Goal difference +66.....Points 97

Remaining three league fixtures to play:-

Bury,,,,,,,,,,,,..Padiham (H), Cheadle Town (A), Burscough (H)
Lower Breck...Litherland REMYCA (H), Barnoldswick Town (H), Cheadle Town (A)

You can be certain that Cheadle Town will not be too happy with their final two games this season.

Halifax 0-1 Hartlepool

A poor game between two middling sides decided by a truly atrocious referee. The goal came from a free kick that wasn’t a foul, and was given five seconds after the incident when a Hartlepool player complained. In the second half a Halifax player, poised to shoot six yards out, had the ball knocked away by the hand of a defender lying on the ground. The ref waved play on and then booked the Halifax manager for dissent.

My lot (Fulham) not turning up yesterday lunchtime against Palace has vexed me somewhat, but fair play to Palace who got it tactically spot on. Such an opportunity missed to get to Wembley and potentially reverse the pain of losing to West Ham fifty years ago!

Another good result for Stockton Town beating Worksop, who are currently 2nd, 3-0 in the Northern Premier - Premier league. 4 games to go & if results go our way 2nd or 3rd place for us and home advantage in the play-offs.

If ever a club epitomised the term 'defeat snatched from the jaws of victory ' it is Walsall.

Only a few months ago they were 12 (maybe more) points clear in League Two. Now they are in 3rd place, rapidly heading for the playoffs, and we know that may not be successful.

Yet another loss sees Grantham Town relegated from the Northern Premier League (Midlands division). Then again, they haven't won since October 2024. A particularly gutting day for the diehard fans.

Bury 4 ... Padiham 0

An attendance of 3,833 saw Bury score twice in each half against one of the better sides in the division and consolidate top spot in the league.

With just two more league matches now to play, they are three points clear of second-placed Lower Breck, with a superior goal difference.

I find this shocking to believe. Grantham should really have a higher step club than UCL. Shocking.

It's what they've deserved for the last few years. Covid saved them from relegation. Other clubs going to the wall / league restructuring also prevented something many people expected, certainly at board level within the club.

Now gives the club time to take stock, accept the failings of the board and regroup for life at UCL level. Oh, and the FA get their opportunity to have Grantham Town in the FA Vase, for the first time.

Talking of teams find in their true level, Hyde United seem to have found their level as an upper-mid-level team in the Northern Premier League, Premier Division. Some years ago, they had promotions to the National League North, then to the dizzy heights of the National League where they spent two years, then a run of successive season relegations. The last two seasons saw them finish in sixth place in this current division, one place outside the play-offs and this season, no less than 15 of their matches have been draws.

I think S.......ton have found theirs again, back to the Championship after losing @ Spurs today.

As a Portsmouth fan i'm really upset about that. Now just got to make sure we stay up

I always felt that Tameside could support a Football League club but for the sheer number of local non-League sides all of a similar size and all having a moment in the sun. I recall Hyde, Droylesden and Stalybridge Celtic all making appearances in the Conference and both Ashton sides have featured in the National League North in recent years, Curzon doing particularly well right now. Local derbies against Oldham and Rochdale are an outside possibility next season if they sneak into the play-offs and do the unthinkable. Stranger things have happened.

With their victory at Peterboro (2-1) tonight, Birmingham City confirm their promotion to return to the Championship, with six league games remaining.

Birmingham City face the same opponents on Sunday in the EFL Trophy final, where they will be backed by over 43000 of their supporters.

My first trip to Birmingham was in 1981 and we were winning 2-1 and I think it was Kevin Dillon who scored a cracking equaliser. Had a seat that day and celebrated both west ham goals even though I was in the home seats. Eventful day as a jewellers shop had a bin chucked through it. I was new to all this and walked to the ground from new street. £10.90 return. Congrats blues.
