However, even if they did have enough spare stock to make that possible, the increased frequency on the new timetable means that most services are booked to use the short bay platforms at stations like Reading, and only half of a through platform at New Street - I think the timetable would be totally unworkable if they needed longer platforms!

Virgin could use a through platform at New St - contrary to population belief, New St's issues come mainly from poor approach capacity, there's actually plenty of platform space, and trains sharing a platform doesn't really happen that often at all.
